Horrible hip pain while sleeping? anyone?

I had this with my prvious pregnancies but not until the end. Sleeping has become unbearable. My hips really really hurt. I have to switch sides all the time, to the point where I am not getting any sleep. I am huge this time around (Ilook now what I looked like at the end of my pregnancies) and I know it definately has something to do with it.

Any tips on how to make my nights a bit more comfortable?

Re: Horrible hip pain while sleeping? anyone?

  • Yup, I had this last time.  It hasn't started yet but I know what you are talking about.  I think sleeping with a pillow between your knees is pretty helpful.  The key is getting one that is the right thickness, ie not too thick which is uncomfortable or not too thin, which doesn't help enough.

    Good luck!

  • Yes! Me too!! This is my third pregnancy and I honestly don't remember them hurting like this (although I am a little older this time around).

Everyone suggests putting a pillow in between my legs and I do, but that still isn't relieving the pressure from my hips on the bed. It feels like all of my weight is pushed onto my hips when I sleep and I wake up with them just aching like mad. And, really... I haven't gained that much weight. I even have a memory foam cushion on my bed.

So, IDK what to tell you, but if you figure something out, be sure to pass it on!

    this is me exactly... lol

I haven't gained much weight either, (only 5 lbs) but my uterus has expanded way more this time around (my uterus is mesuing 6 weeks AHEAD). I also have memeory foam on my bed and thought it would help but NADA! I am in so much pain!

  • I'm actually thinking about getting one of those snoogle pillow things. It's shaped like an "S" and I thought I could somehow sleep ON it instead of IN it to get my hips up off the bed. But, I'm not sure how comfortable that would be. HA!

All I know is I'll be sure to take my calcium supplements everyday, because if this is what little old ladies with arthritis of the hips feel like, I really don't want that business :)

  • I have had horrible hip pain for months and i have only gained 12 pounds to date. I have a snoogle and that helps a little but i went to my doctor and i was complaining about it and she said since i am not high risk i can prop a pillow a little bit under one hip and lay on my back. Let me tell you that has helped soooooooooooooooo much. I am a back and belly sleeper so sleep is getting a little bearable.

    Good luck.

  • Yes!  It's terrible!!  I can barely sleep and when I do, my hips and pelvis are so sore and achy.  I've tried just about everything I can think of....pillows, snoogle, new memory foam mattress topper....nothing has really helped.

Sorry I can't help, but if you figure out something that works, let me know!

  • I love my pillow fortress. And now with DH away it just occured to me that I have two more pillows! YAY!

Lot sof pillow support. I tend to roll onto my back and my hips hurt so I have a body pillow under my knees and I sleep kinda sitting up on an angle. Works great. I get about 7 hours sleep a night.

  • I had the same problem early in my pregnancy!  I mentioned it to my doctor... he said that if I had only had a couple of weeks left he would tell me to take some tylenol PM.  But since I had 15 weeks left he referred me to a physical therapist.  I went, and it worked!  I didn't have any more hip pain until last week (37 weeks)!  The physical therapist just pushed in some certain places and did some stretches to straighten my pelvis out - one hip was a bit higher than the other and causing pain.  Good luck!
  • I have had this since the begining of my second trimester...I am normally a tummy sleeper, but since that is near impossible when you are pregnant I would start on my left side, switch to the right, eventually prop myself sitting up with all the pillows I could find, just to start over again half way through the night.  Uhg.

I have the Boppy Body Pillow and it has just recently started working better for me. It went "flat" very quickly, so if you need more padding, I would recommend a different pillow.  I also like to put a stiff couch pillow under one hip/side and pretend to lay on my back.

I also noticed that days when I go to my yoga class (or at least do some of the stretches at home) I don't notice the pain as much.  I wasn't a yoga buff before I got pregnant, but a good stretch can feel amazing (and is totally worth it if I even get 20 more minutes of sleep!)  Try Cat-Cow, Downward Facing Dog (some people frown upon pregos doing this b/c it is almost inversion...heard conflicting reports, make your own decision), and Child's Pose.  Some of the warrior stances are also good hip stretchers!

    Feel Better!

  • I complained about this very problem this week to my doctor. It really makes sleeping miserable. I'm normally a back sleeper. Like PP said, my doctor said to put a pillow under one hip and I could sleep on my back. She said that was enough so that it wouldn't reduce blood flow to the uterus. I haven't done this yet because I'm semi-worried about it although I shouldn't be.

Good luck! If you find a miracle cure, please let us all know!

  • Do you have a recliner in the house?  half the time I have to resort to the couch to recline with a pillow under my knees for comfort in the night.  I'll usually stay there for a few hours then head back to bed.  I think it's just the change in pace that helps.

  • We have a sleep number bed but I ended up getting a 4 inch memory foam topper for it...and that has almost eliminated my hip pain.  I had gotten to the point that I wasn't getting any sleep so this is the best thing since sliced bread in my opinion!

  • I have been having hip pains for weeks now! It really is unbearable! I have tried putting a pillow between my legs and that really doesn't seem to help.  The only time I get relief is when I wake up on my back.  I don't mean to sleep on my back, but the pain must get to me sometimes and I end up that way.  Last night I tried placing a bunch of pillows behing me and sleeping kind of sitting up and that seemed to help, but I struggle with staying in one place all night.

This is pretty much what I do too.  I can sleep a few hours in the bed (memory foam and snoogle and all) and then I've move to the couch where I prop my back up and put one of the cushions under my knees.

For some reason, the pain was just awful a couple weeks ago but it has seemed to go away somewhat...

  • I use a square Euro size pillow  26x26 in between my knees.  It's big and fluffy.

It is $9.99 at target , where they sell bed pillows, not decor pillows.

  • Adding extra padding to the bed itself, in combo with using my body pillow, helped me from about 28 weeks until a few weeks ago. Now I need to flip over about the same time I need to pee at night so I just flip over after every bathroom run. It's not fun, but I still feel reasonably rested.
  • I have absolutely horrific hip pain too! We have a bean bag chair that I've been sleeping in about every other night since the beginning of 3rd tri and it's helped so much. I can lay in any position without pressure or pain since it molds to me :) I highly recommend it!
  • I basically switch sides all the time throughout the night. If it gets very bad then I prop myself up with pillows and sit in a reclining position on my bed till it subsides then attempt to lie down again.
