I have been lurking on the EFF board for awhile and I am planning on CDing this baby when she comes. I obviously have a ton of questions since I have never CD before so I planned on going to the CD class at Park and Vine on May 2nd. Has anyone ever been to the class? Also, I have never been to the store, do they sell Thirsties? I am thinking that this is the brand that I am going to use but I would like to actually see them first hand before I make any decisions! It is all so overwhelming!!
Re: Lurker here with a cloth diaper question
Hi! Welcome. There are several moms who CD here. I have never been to Park and Vine, and do all my buying online. I highly recommend the Jilliansdrawers trial so you can try many different types of diapers with no obligation. You would want to wait until just before your EDD to order them, then you get 21 days to try and decide after baby arrives. My word of caution is not to stock up on too many before the baby arrives and you can try them out. Every baby and mom is different, and it is so hard to tell what you will like and what works for the baby before trying them out. I have sold many diapers that I thought I would love and ended up not so happy after trying them out. It truly is trial and error, then you find what you love, and a nice routine. It is so easy after that. I wish you luck. Feel free to ask all the questions you need to ask. Lots of moms here will jump in and help.
Congrats on your daughter! I hope you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

We didn't start CDing until Ethan was 7 months so I don't have experience with a newborn. If what we have does not work for our next baby at first, I will definitely do one of the trials as mentioned. For us, I wanted convenience (something constructed similar to a disposable) and something one-size (meaning the size can be adjustable) so I didn't have to buy new sizes as the baby grew. For those reasons, we decided to try the Bum Genius 3.0's and they worked well for us so I didn't try anything else, and made my stash with just them. Within our one year warranty, we were having tons of problems with our aplix (velcro closure) not sticking where it was supposed to, and having huge wads of cloth diapers sticking together in the wash cycle. It was just a big headache for me every time I did the wash. Cotton Babies has AWESOME customer service and replaced my entire stash for brand new BG3's. They suggested that I line dry my covers to help preserve the aplix, which I did every time. In just a few months I was back in the same boat, even with line drying my covers. I was still technically under warranty, so we decided to try the BG One Size All-in-One Organics with snaps (they didn't make the BG3's with snap closure). I paid the price difference to upgrade. It has been so well worth it for me!! I'm very happy with the snap closure, the absorbency has been fine, they are very trim, and a plus is they are all one piece so there is no stuffing inserts - I didn't mind stuffing with the BG3's but it is definitely easier now with not having to stuff. They have worked very well for us and I highly recommend them. I have had 2 diapers have one snap break - Cotton Babies replaced them for free. The only downfall I have found with BG OS AIO's is that the inserts are organic cotton and do not "wick" moisture away. We change Ethan's diaper frequently so that is not a problem for us, but at night time or if his bottom gets irritated from food or something, I put a piece of flannel or fleece on top of the inside of the diaper to work as a wicking agent. I wish the top layer of the sewn in inserts had some type of wicking material. I wasn't concerned about wanting an organic material, but others prob are, so that isn't an option right now. That's the only thing I wish they would change
For night time, we've always put extra inserts inside (with the BG3's and the organics we have now). We just ordered some hemp inserts to use for nighttime per hav2run's suggestion. I would prob like some pockets just to use for overnight, but our OS AIO's have been doing the job so I haven't bought anything else.
HTH! I'm so excited to see more CD mama's now!!
Hi I am using cloth diapers (bumgenius exclusively)! I have been to park and vine and I do think I saw the thirsties covers. I would recommend doing a trial to see which ones work for you. I thought I wanted to do more prefolds and covers, but it didnt work for us. I liked how bumgenius diapers were really easy to use so that babysitters, family, and the daycare center could easily use them. When you do the trial they will send different types to try and its great because you never know what will work for you until you try.
I havent been to the class at Park and vine but plan to go on may 2 just to see what they have to say. I did go to a cloth diapering class at the Cincinnati family enrichment center and it was great. BTW. the enrichment center is going to begin to carry cloth diapers which is great because the only other place in cincy (at least that I have found) is park and vine.
GL I have really loved cloth diapering! Oh one more thing is that we didnt start it until he was 2 months. I read in several places it is easier to start after a month or two bc they are more regulated and they fit into the diapers a bit more..However, I know many people who did just fine with newborns in cloth diapers.
