I've been reading French Women Don't Get Fat. There is a "Magical Leek Soup" weekend fast that the book promotes so DH and I figured we could try it (me to lose the last of the Clomid water weight before starting Follistim and him the jump start a health kick from all the post smoking eating he is doing). So I bought 4 lbs of leeks last night and made this so called "soup." I had 1 cup of this stinky stuff this morning and nearly vommited. I told DH to forget the "soup", basically that if you love someone you don't let them eat it. So I go to dump the remaining soup and boiled leeks (you can eat them as part of the fast, but really, who would want to?) down the garbage disposal....long story short HUGE CLOG!!! Buh-bye 800 dollars to the plumber...all this as I await my IVF drug order to clear

I made an 800 dollar mistake...I feel like a douche!
Re: I Feel Like An Idiot!!!
In more ways than one. Have you ever smelled boiled leeks?
The plumber was even bowled over by the smell.
They are kind of like onions but they look like fennel. They are disgusting. If this is how the French truly stay thin no wonder so many of them are cranky!
I think it wouldn't have been so bad if I had just jammed the disposal. The disposal was fine...the leek fibers backed up the entire pipe from the kitchen drain leading to the main waste line. He had to snake the pipes all the way across my basement. It took 3 hours....at one point he thought we might have to replace them...thank god we didn't..it would have cost all my IVF money!
I am so sorry - that is a huge bummer.
But I love leeks! I make a napa cabbage and leek recipe that is awesome! And leek tomato quinoa and lobster gratin with leeks and carrots that is probably my favorite meal of all time!
However, leek soup? I don't know about that...but now I want to try! They're just a really mild onion.....how bad can it be? Dare I ask for the recipe?
This really isn't a soup...it is just the water from boiling the leeks and then letting them simmer for 30 minutes. By all means try it....it tasted like onion flavored tea. I would think that in small quantities as a flavor aid in a dish they are probably not so bad but this way...not my thing.
DH and I both love Rachel Ray's BLTP stoup - Bacon, Leeks, Tomato and Potato! num num num.
$800 is rediculous for a plumber to come unclog a drain for you. That sucks.
It wasn't the drain...it was the entire pipe!!!!! He had to snake all the way across my basement to the main waste line.
