*** LCB & others with NOLA rec's ***

I am thinking about taking a little weekend getaway for our anniversary in June, and want to get some feedback from everyone on what to do in New Orleans.  I just realized how short of a drive it is from where we live (~5 hours) so we're thinking of maybe a 2-3 day long-weekend type trip.  I have found a ton of things to do on tourist/travel websites, but want to get some real rec's from people I "know" who have been there.

What would you recommend or not recommend to do with such a short amount of time there?  I know we need to go to Cafe du Monde for the beignets and chickory coffee, and we'd like to see some historical sites and old homes, etc.  I was thinking maybe the aquarium if it's nice (we love aquariums) but wasn't sure if it was worth it or not.

What else should make our short list of things to do with such a limited time to see the city?  A must-stay hotel or restaurant that's not ridiculously expensive (traveling on a budget since saving up for treatments)?!  Thanks for any thoughts and recommendations!!

Re: *** LCB & others with NOLA rec's ***

  • I lived in NOLA for 4 years and go back at least twice a year.  I am going for Memorial Day weekend.

I like *** and Jenny's, Dickie Brennan's steak house, Cuvee, and The Palace Cafe for jazz brunch.  Oh, and Elizabeth's for brunch - much more casual.  Le Crepe Nanou in Uptown is good too.

The best pralines are from Southern Candy Makers in the quarter.

I think there are better beignets than Cafe du Monde - I find there's to be heavy and doughy.  I like Morning Call's better.  And there is a place on Royal Street in the quarter that is great, but I can't remember the name.

The aquarium used to be fabulous, but I haven't been since the hurricane.  I love Royal Street in the quarter.  It has all of the art galleries.  Magazine Street also has lots of shops.  There is Harrah's for gambling.

I had a friend that did a tour of drinks in the Quarter which she loved.  You go to 5 different places and get one signature drink at each place and a history lesson.

Cemetery tours are popular too.  Tipitina's or Howl at the Moon for music.

Hope you have a great time.

  • I was there for a conference a few years back, and the food there is both affordable and amazing.

Mother's Cafeteria for breakfast and po' boys.  Try the biscuit with debris!

I also loved the ACME oyster bar.  It was excellent and well worth the wait. I believe it was also on an episode of Man v. food.

I didn't get to see too much touristy stuff though.

    Enjoy!

I could go on forever since I lived there my entire life so here are a few things:

The Aquarium and the Zoo offer a dual ticket with a river boat tour on the Mississippi - it is really fun and both attractions are worth spending time at.  I absolutely love the New Orleans Zoo!

For older homes I would visit the Garden district - just take a street car and ride down St Charles or Magazine - very beautiful homes!

It is 100% worth it to spend time walking through the quarter, around Jackson Square, and by the River Walk.  Central Grocery (near Cafe de Monde) has wonderful muffalettas (one is more than enough for two people) and Mother's has amazing poboys.  JW Fins is a great place for a more upscale dinner in the quarter as well as Brennan?s, and Commanders Palace.

I disagree about the beignets.  Morning Call is just OK and is not the "original".  Definitely go to Cafe du Monde.

If you are up for drinks one night, have a Hurricane from Pat O'Briens - so yummy but they are strong!

If you have any other questions let me know!

  • Definitely check out the cemeteries but instead of paying for a guided tour, just walk on over during the day and check them out. Marie Laveau's tomb is near the front of St. Louis Cemetery and you can't miss it. We paid for a guided tour and now I feel like it was such a waste of money. All our guide did was walk us through the cemetery and talk about the people buried there. Which is clearly a very obvious thing to take place on the tour but I expected more for some reason. lol

I loved drinking a margarita from Margaritaville and I'm in love with St. Louis Cathedral, which is across the street from Cafe du Monde. In my two trips to NOLA, I have yet to get a beignet from there b/c the line is always super long.

Check out my photo album on FB from my last trip to NOLA!

  • How can you say a mean word regarding Cafe Du Monde!!?? ;)  Take your bike or rent one while you are there because you can see so much on a bike.  Actually, www.confederacyofcruisers.com

If you can, take a ride up Esplanade to Liuza's by the Tracks.  Eat a Barbeque Shrimp Poboy and a bowl of gumbo.

If you guys take I-10 through MS on your way, stop at exit 50 in Ocean Springs, MS.  I live here after moving from NOLA and we have a super cute downtown with cafes and shops.

  • DH and I were just there.  We stayed at the Country Inn & Suites on Magazine Street.  It was clean and nice.  It is within walking distance of a lot of stuff.

I totally agree with Mother's for food.  We also went to Bubba Gump Shrimp on Decatur Street.

Now we did to a cemetery tour through the St. Louis Cemetery #1 but we had the BEST tour guide ever.  His name was Erine with https://www.hauntedhistorytours.com/

We also did a river boat tour up the Mississippi River but we just did the boat ride during the day without food or gambling.

  • My fav. meal in NOLA was at Olivier's, it's across from the House of Blues - https://www.olivierscreole.com/

We had SO much fun on the swamp tour. At first I didn't think it would really be our thing, but it was actually quite cool. We also took a graveyard tour that was really neat. Plus, we downloaded a historical walking tour for the Garden District that was pretty cool. I can't remember where we got it from, but it was nice just to go at our own pace & check out all the awesome homes and gardens.

Have fun, it's a great town w/ SO much incredible music and delicious food, I can't understand why anyone wouldn't love it.

  • Thank you all for all of these great recommendations!  I will be checking them out asap and saving this post for our trip in June!  :)
