MIL made my day utter crap!

So last night, my MIL (who lives 2 1/2 hours away) asked me to send her a pic of my bump..ok..no biggie right?..well first thing she reply's back was.."are you sure theres only ONE in there?!" AngryAnd we have lift-off..I was ticked. THAN she calls DH and asks him if we want a stroller or bassinet from this yard sale she was at. First off, I am not above yard sailing, I actually love it. BUT certain things I would like to get new, like bedding (bassinet). She is just rubbing me the wrong way lately. Am I overreacting?

  • Truth: you are slightly overreacting, BUT who isn't on this board, right? : )   I think if you weren't hormonal those comments probly wouldn't bother you at all.
  • I think the weight comment wasnt very nice. But then again its going to happen alot sadly...And with the yard sale..yeah a little bit overreacting.. Hey hormones happen! Just try to breathe!

  • You are, but its ok.  Just vent to DH and try to not talk to her til you cool down.
  • yeah, I had the feeling I was...but you know...MIL's just sometimes get under your skin more than they should..Stick out tongue
  • Honestly? Yes, you're over-reacting. It happens. :)

  • I read your post and had the same thing happen to me! And I too find that sometimes things she says just gets under my skin. I have found this happens to me about once or twice a year with her.  So i'm not surprised it's happening now.  She said that she thought I was having a girl because girls take the mothers beauty away...something along those lines. I laughed it off and then made a mental note to add that comment to my journal where I keep all the ridiculous comments (i've gotten quite a few). And no I'm not having a girl, i'm having a boy :)

And then the next day she started talking about setting up her crib (that she used for my husband--28yrs ago) to be the baby's crib for when he is at her house. I LOVE my mother-in-law but I did get a little nervous with that suggestion. I politely and in conversation mentioned that maybe we'll buy her a pack-n-play for when the baby stays there...

Good luck!!!! I guess humor is the best way to deal :) Thats why I have my crazy comment journal. It makes me laugh.

yeah same here, the bassinet she found at the yardsale was quote "vintage"...I don't know if that  means "vintage-cool" or "vintage-baby death trap"...yunno?..lol

  • Your MIL probably thought she was being funny with the bump comment...though it's not funny! It wasn't nice! I think with all the hormones we all tend to over react a little, it's to be expected! People say stupid things when yor pregnant and they never even realize they could be hurting your feelings or offending you! Personally I would vent to my DH and try to forget about it. I know that's easier said than done(I have a FIL that says some hurtful things sometimes), but try to relax a little! Good luck and I'm sure you look absolutely beautiful!
  • Personally I would be really irritated by the bump comment. I mean...she asked for a picture just so she could be rude. As for the yard sale issue, don't be mad, just say no thanks.

  • Yes you are overreacting, however, I would've done the same. I think it's all about your relationship with her overall. If you haven't had the best relationship with her, then it doesn't matter what she says, you'll be upset. I am going through the same thing and react the same way....
