Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did your DC switch to 1 nap/day?

My twins are 14 mths and still taking 2 naps (9 am and 3 pm).  When did your DC switch?  Did it just happen naturally (i.e. one day they didn't want to take their morning nap) or did you have to get them on a new schedule?  If new schedule, how did you do it?

Re: When did your DC switch to 1 nap/day?

  • DS is 16 months and still solidly on 2 naps a day.  We have a schedule that allows us to work around his needs, and we do.  I look for signs that he's ready, but I don't see any.

  • mine switched before a year but that's early. she was fighting the 2nd nap and it became really short and she was a nightmare by bedtime. Daycare actually switched her because it made more sense and she transitioned on the weekend and at my moms a month later. I say go with their cues unless you want one nap. If they are happily taken both and you are ok with it, keep it.
  • DS transitioned around a year. He started taking longer to fall asleep for his first nap and fighting his second nap. So, I just followed his cues. For a few weeks we went between one and two naps until we fully transitioned to one.

  • My DS had a really long transition starting at about 16 months. I just tried to be flexible. By the time he was 18 months he was down to one a day. There are some days (bad teething, growth spurts, or when he's sick) that he still does 2 naps, but they are few and very far between.

  • Right around 15-16 months. He sort of started doing it on his own, as his second nap was in the car on the way home from work and some nights, he quit falling asleep in the car. So I asked his DCP to push his morning nap back to noon or later and he dropped that second nap.

  • DS is transitioning now.  He first started at daycare, where he would only nap once per day, and at home he stopped being able to take his afternoon nap on some days, after he had taken a really long morning nap.  Now some days he takes one nap, others two.  If I think it's going to be a one nap day or if we have stuff to do, I will hold off his morning nap as late as possible, and try to put him down after lunch, around 1130-1200.  Other days it's clear that he's ready at 1000 to take a nap.  Honestly it's a bit tricky right now because I never know what he's going to do.  I'm guessing in a month or so we'll have transitioned to one nap, but it's not quite as cut and dry as one day he didn't want to take his morning nap.  I really like the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child as it helps with some of these issues, and gives you some statistics about when children do what with their naps etc. GL with your twins.

  • About 16 months and it was a challenge.  He was taking 2 really crappy naps so I made the switch but it wasn't until 18-19 months that he was on a really solid 1 nap a day schedule.

  • Around 11 monts DD transitioned to one nap; her morning nap (around 10) was getting worse and worse - down to 10 or 15 minutes.  I talked to the daycare teacher and she suggested switching DD up to one nap, just after lunch.  It worked like a charm - one day, they just didn't put her down, powered throught until lunch and then she went down right afterward for a solid 2 hours - we've never looked back.  She will sometimes take her nap earlier (before lunch) but unless she's sick, she doesn't take more than one nap.

  • Around 11 months. DS just wouldn't fall asleep until 11 am, no matter what we did. Finally I pushed back the nap until 11:30 so I could squeeze an early lunch in. He naps for 2 hours, and sleeps 12-13 hours at night.

  • 18 months

I'm a teacher and over spring break I gave it a whirl and it took a week to get used to it.  I noticed that he seemed like he could stay awake later, so I pushed the nap back about an hour to 90 minutes and now he takes on in the middle of the day:)

  • It was at 1 year. DS is in daycare, at 1 year he switched rooms.  They helped transition him to 1 nap because that is the schedule in the room.  It went really easily, especially with their help.
