Weird rashes - which virus?

I wanted to solicit opinions.  E. has a low-grade temp, runny nose, dry cough and upper torso rash.  S. is chipper and full of energy, no fever or congestion, and has a slapped cheek rash that's also on the back of her neck and upper torso.

We're confined to the house for today - 7th concentric ring of hell.  They're both eating and playing well and seem perfectly comfortable but I'm afraid they may be contagious.

Does it sound like Fifth Disease or possibly Roseola?

Re: Weird rashes - which virus?

  • Probably not roseola as the rash typically appears after the fever has broken.

ETA:  Sorry you are stuck in the house today.  Hopefully, it is not contagious and you can get out soon!

  • Sorry you are trapped in today. It sounds like fifths to me. My oldest had it when he started MDO and it went away quickly. He had the red cheeks and rash on the back of his neck as well as on his chest and a slight temp, other than that he was a happy camper.

I'd like to meet up with you at La Madeline's when I get back from Paris. I'm hoping that I will have some new recipes to share!

  • Thank you both!

Mrs.Woods, yes we should - it would be lots of fun.  Will you page me when you get back and you're up for it?  I hope you have some great new recipes and I would love to meet you.

  • My first thought was Fifth disease.  O had roseola last summer and he ran a very high fever for several days before it broke and the rash popped up.
  • fifth is supposed to look like a slapped cheek but i thought it was usually on their trunk. they also say it looks like lace (like you put lace on them and spray painted-the rash is what was left).

Just read up on that one.  They don't have any sores in their mouths and their palms and soles look okay.  I probably should have called the doctor this morning and just taken them in today for a sick visit!

A and J just had a strain that didn't involve sores in the HFM.  It was on A's face and J's limbs.  Poor babies.

  • roseola is high fever and then rash after the fever breaks.  it's a huge rash on trunk and arms.
