I'm not sure what the diff is between a lovey and a real one, but fay uses a blanket that's about the size of her crib sheet, and she won't fall asleep without it. she likes to rub her face in it as she's falling asleep.
We started putting one in there around winter time. He didnt like to be snuggled, he hated those sleeper things so we ended up using a blanket. I would say around 5 months is when we started.
I've let DS sleep with one for the past few weeks, maybe a month tops, but it is a knit blanket that is very thin and holey. It's very breathable and it would be very difficult to be suffocated by it. It's small too.
