1st Trimester

When is 1st u/s?

I am reading others posts and some say they are getting first u/s at 6-8w?  My doctor wont even see me until 8w and she said no u/s at that appointment.  I hear some other docs wont see their pts until 12w?  I wonder why there is such a big difference between practices?

Re: When is 1st u/s?

  • I had my first ultrasound (it was an internal) at 6 weeks because I did IVF and that was with my RE not my OBGYN.

  • My 1st u/s is on Monday to date how far along I am since I have wacky cycles.  I know when I o'd and how far along I am but the doctor wants to confirm (fine by me).  Don't know why there is such a difference between offices.
  • With Evelyn, I had seen my family doctor at 5 weeks, and told him I was pregnant (and will do the same at her 6 month appointment next tuesday)... he then orders a bunch of bloodwork, and two tests.... I can't remember what they're called, it's some 3 letter acronym, but both tests involve ultrasounds and bloodwork, the first done at approx. 12 weeks, the second between 18 - 20 weeks. I actually had to get 3 ultrasounds done with Evelyn because she did nothing but moon the technician at the 18 week one, so they couldn't complete the scan the way they wanted to, so I had to go back the next week... thank goodness I did, cuz I wanted to find out the sex of the baby and the first technician wouldn't even HINT at what it was (it's illegal for them to actually tell us... a doctor has to tell us), and the second one did hint, and then found the report from the week before and confirmed our "guess" Big Smile

I imagine this next baby will be the same, but for my actual OBGYN, the practice I went to didn't even want to bother seeing me till I was somewhere around 26 weeks, I think! I'm thinking of getting a midwife or going to a different practice this time around (different hospital).

I had a m/c with my first pregnancy and then I had to go and see a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE) to get pregnant so I had two, one at 6 weeks and then 8 weeks.
  • I had an early ultrasound with both pregnancies due to spotting. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten one until 20 weeks.

  • 7w4d...given what happened last time, we're checking early this time make sure everything is on track. Last time I had it for dating purposes, but that's where everything went downhill.

It's not uncommon to only have one u/s around 20 weeks. Most insurance companies won't cover u/s unless the doctor terms it "medically" necessary.

  • I'm having my first u/s with this pregnancy at 10 weeks. With my first pregnancy, it was at 8 weeks (different doctor).

  • The one at 20ish weeks is pretty much standard for everyone.  Beyond that, it has more to do with your OB's preferences and your medical history to determine if you will need more.  I had one at 12 weeks (my OB does this to date the pregnancy) and the anatomy scan at 18 weeks.  Unless something comes up, that's all I need.
  • I had an ultrasound at 6w 5d because I had some spotting.  I have a subchorionic hematoma and will have quite a few more u/s until it goes away.  My next one is next Thursday at 7w 5d.

  • It depends on a number of factors- how high risk you are, history of IF, what your insurance allows, etc. I had my u/s at my first appt so they could date me. I thought I was 9w but from the u/s I was actually 8w.
  • My insurance covers my ultrasounds.

First ultrasound will be at 6w5d. My next one will be sometime in early June.

I had one last time at 6 weeks due to spotting as well, but otherwise not until 20 weeks!

  • I had an early ultrasound to date the pregnancy (turned out to be seven weeks along). I only ovulate three or four times a year, so they weren't sure when conception occurred.
  • My RE does the first one at 7 weeks and then again about 7-10 days later. I went in a week early because I was going to be out of town.

I have no idea if they do 2 or 3 total.

  • I have my first appt at around 10 weeks, but I won't be getting an ultrasound then. Maybe 11-12 weeks along.

  • I think it depends on the Dr.  Mine does an U/S at the first appointment.  That was at 6 weeks for me, but by the start of my last cycle should have been 8 weeks.  I also wonder if the type of insurance effects their decision...

  • My first one is at 7 weeks.  I didn't think to ask why or how frequent they would be, I was just excited I'd be getting one soon!  FWIW, I have no history or concerning symptoms or anything.

  • I had my first us at 8 weeks. I probably won't get another until my next appointment in June.
  • First appt. 8weeks3days not with the doc it's with the NP they do an internal u/s to check viability. Next appt with OB at 12 weeks.
  • Mine is this Monday at 6w2d, but I'm seeing an RE.  I know my OB typically doesn't do them until 10 weeks.
  • I only had one u/s my whole pregnancy last time and that was the one at 20w.  I guess I tried to look at it as a blessing that everything was very normal and I didn't need anymore.
  • mine is 9w2d, next friday!  I can't wait!
