Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone have a baby that scratches all the time?

my poor lo has had dry skin and little patches of eczema since birth. I've tried Aquaphor lotion like the ped suggested.

He scratches his head all the time which I can attribute to cradle cap (even though most of it is gone now)....his forehead and two side temples are red and always look like he was in a fight with kittens.

It's hard to keep his nails trimmed since he's so active and flails all the time but I know he is itchy and scratches all the time.

Any advice? I saw Disney Baby Eczema Cream......or something Cradle Cap shampoo but didn't pick it up.  I've tried Aveeno too.

God Bless our sweet baby James. Our son, born 11/22/09. Unplanned, Emergency C-section image

  • I can tell you from experience, the Disney Baby Eczema cream and Cradle Cap shampoo are garbage.  Don't waste your money.  DS1 had HORRIBLE cradle cap.  We could seriously see his scalp oozing yellow oil when he got frustrated.  The only way we got rid of his cradle cap was by dousing his head in olive oil--letting it soak for 5-10 minutes, and rubbing off the scales with a soft bristle tooth brush.

Eczema--well, he still has it.  Keeping him well moisturized (applying regular lotion, usually a Gold Bond or something of the sort, 2X per day) keeps it at bay, but we never completely eradicate it.

DS1 scratched his head when he was frustrated.  It was kind of his thing.  Not sure you can keep him from scratching.  Believe it or not, cradle cap doesn't usually bother babies--it bothers mothers.

  • mustela newborn foam shampoo is awesome for cradle cap

I heard eucerin is great for skin problems. I bought some today and just started trying.

Aveeno (oat) unscented and calandula lotions are also great.

  • I tried to cut LO's nails when he is sleeping. It also works when I sing to him sometimes.
  • Yes, especially when he is tired or waking up. My son has eczema, too. For his nails, I have DH cut them while I'm feeding him. Thats the only time we're able to cut them with a lesser risk of cutting him accidently.

  • For the cradle cap my pedi recommended putting on baby aquaphor, scrubbing the area with a toothbrush, and then putting more aquaphor on top of that.  I did that for a few days and problem solved!!  As for the nails I always clip her nails when she's sleeping or have DH feed her while I clip her nails.

  • My baby was just put on prescription strength hydrocortisone for her eczema on her skin and a liquid form of it for her head. The dr said it wasn't cradle cap on her head. They have started to work already and we also changed her formula to Nutramagin based on the doctor's recommendation. It seems that the combination of the meds and formula have helped clear her up. I hope she doesn't truly have a milk allergy though, this Nutramagin stuff stinks! Ick!

  • Oh and PS: Cetaphil lotion is better than the Aquaphor, according to my dr. I tried the Aquaphor and it worked for a little while then stopped.
  • We had to use a steroid cream for his cradle cap because he was scratching so much. Nothing else worked, but this worked in a few days. You may want to try the pedi again.
