I gave her some vanilla flavored in her morning milk and she is refusing to drink it. She keeps yelling no and either throwing it on the floor, or trying to hand it back to me. This has been since 8 am. I initially put the whole packet in with her morning milk and the first time she threw it on the floor, I poured half of it out and filled it back up w/plain milk again (figuring i'd give her half now and half later...) She still wont drink it.
I want to add that she has had regular chocolate milk and strawberry milk a few times, but she's not crazy about it in general. She just loves plain milk. She loves yogurt smoothies though, which are strawberry flavored... (I get the little Danimals kind, but it's not enough liquid to mix w/the CIB...).
Should I just give up and try the Pediasure? I was hoping she'd take to this right away because the Pediasure is so expensive.... I can't try mixing it with her food either because she wont eat anything goopy or messy, so I have nothing to mix it in with.
Re: Carnation Instant Breakfast is a big FAIL... WTD?
She's gained no weight since her 18 month appt, even though she's been eating a lot better. (this also means that since she turned 1, she's only gained about 2 pounds.) Doc suggested I add CIB or give Pediasure to up her daily calories. I've tried everything else that i've read online or heard on here and it hasn't worked (adding butter, oil, etc to food... She wont eat anything w/a sauce on it, eats very little meat, etc.)
Hmm, J is still the same weight he was at 18 months and my doc said that little weight gain from 18 to 24 months is really normal. He is strong and healthy and rarely sick and eats (is a little picky) so he didn't seem worried but now you have me a little concerned about him. Guess we'll see in July if he is still 24lb or not at 2?
One thing I do is give him yogurt smoothies, they are high fat and he loves them. I either make my own or buy Kefir and he loves it. He also really likes Greek yogurt with fruit which is pretty high. You could even add the CIB to it.
Jackson also eats no meat, he refuses it but I try to give him rice pasta which has more protein and he likes some beans too.
We are small so I guess I don't expect him to be big. I would just try other healthy high fat foods and see how she likes them and give her the pediasure every once in a while if she likes it and it.

what about a smoothie? add ice cubes and the CIB with some fruit??
My DD is small too, we recently started giving her the yogurt smoothies and she loves them, but they are so small. we bought some Yo-J and she loves that stuff too. She won't drink the Enfagrow stuff either, it's vanilla flavored, she got mad at me and threw her sippy.
But my DD loves smoothies, DH makes protein ones and leave the protein out for her, she drinks them really fast.
good luck!
Try the other flavors of CIB. Or Enfamil makes a toddler formula called EnfaGrow - it comes in vanilla and chocolate flavors too. It is expensive, but DD has gone from gaining no weight to gaining 11 grams a day the last 2 months on it.
My kids would never drink the pediasure (or any of the cheap brands of it) - it's too thick and rich. But it does come in a ton of flavors. (and ask your doctor if your dd likes it - the company has an assistance program where you can get it at a big discount) We also used to make the CIB vanilla and add some hershey's strawberry flavor to it. (or chocolate)
I don't know if this would help, but would she drink a smoothie you make? I use 8% yogurt in DS's smoothies... I have seen as high as 11% at the grocery store. That would really up the fat and calorie content.
You can also try yo baby drinkable yogurt and/or keifer. Also toddler formula, ask your doctor for the high calorie mix. It has about 20% more calories than the regular mix. You can also add peanut butter to just about anything, especially smoothies. DD did not take to carnation right away, it took her a bit, probably about 2 weeks, offering a few times a day.
I would not give her Danimals as I am pretty sure they are fat free (not certain as they are not something I buy)
We are on a no peanut product basis right now because of a reaction... (although I didn't mention that...)
I checked the Danimals smoothie nutrition contents and it has 70 cals and .5 grams of fat (it's not fat free, but made with low fat milk... Which I actually didn't know. Maybe i'll look for a different kind.)
can she have soy? What about soy nut butter, or sunbutter (sun flower seeds) or tahini (sesame)?
I would ditto the others and do a full fat yogurt smoothie. Will she eat avacado? Do you cook with regular butter? Just trying to think of anything that could help add extra fats. I think Carnation Instant Breakfast is full of HFCS and a bunch of other skeevy additives, so I definitely wouldn't force that stuff on her. And not to second guess your doctor because that isn't your question, it seems weird that your doc is worried about that lack of weight gain at her age.
ETA: How about giving her a sippy of the Step 2 formula? I think Enfamil has the kind made for kids 12-36 months?
DD #1 passed away in January 2011 at 14 days old due to congenital heart disease
DD#2 lost in January 2012 at 23 weeks due to anhydramnios caused by a placental abruption
I got the No Sugar Added CIB...
Yes of course I want her to gain healthy weight. All she eats all day is already only fruits and veggies.
I just figured that adding the CIB to the milk that she already drinks in a day wouldn't take away from her food intake. I'm afraid if I add another separate liquid she wont eat as much (and although she is eating better lately, she still doesn't eat very much....) The only other fluids that she drinks besides the 16 oz of milk is about 2-3oz of V8 splash (I hide poly vi sol in it), and water.
We do full fat yogurt smoothies. I took someones advice and add half an avocado to the mix- you cannot taste it in the smoothie.
I add cream cheese to pancakes, graham crackers and whatever else I think it will work on
I have added milk when cooking her oatmeal and then a splash half and half to it also along with butter. Creamy fat oatmeal
That is all I have for you. Good luck!
The no sugar added has artificial sweeteners. That's worse, imo.
I'd go with what she likes, the smoothies and try to add some healthy fats to that. But, like others have mentioned, I'm wondering why your doc is so concerned about her gaining weight. If she's healthy and she's not losing weight, I'd think she's fine.
I agree about not wanting to fill her up with smoothies. We went down that road for a short time with DS and he started wanting basically a liquid diet. So we cut him back and got him calories other ways. Like dipping his fruit in whipped cream or cream cheese.
Ask your doctor - if your dd will drink pediasure you can get in the program and it works out to be just as cheap as buying whole milk. There are other things your doctor will have access to as well - Nestle has a "milk" that is high calorie and they also have a program where you can get it cheaper. (that though is a prescription only item)
EDIT: It's called Nestle Nutren Junior. There is also one that comes in a box like a juice box with a dragon on it - i forget the name of that one.
