Babies: 9 - 12 Months

May be an old question but I am never on

How in the world do I get her to use a sippy cup? I started trying at 6 months. All she does is chew on it. I have tried 4 different kinds, including a straw one? I have put juice, formula, a little bit of milk and water all in it. All she does is chew on it. At DD's 9 month our Pedi told use to really work on it. How do I get her to use it? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! TIA.

  • I am on the same boat. He is not interested no matter what I put in it. Thinking of trying the "tilty cup" link is only a few posts down...

  • i have heard that it often works if you take a boxed juice drink and squeeze it to show them that something can come up the straw, that it works really well.  i would try that and then offer her a straw sippy with water to see if she figures it out.  GL!

  • DS did the same thing, and than one day he just did it!  :-)  He still "plays" but he gets the jist of it now.  BTW he will only drink out of sippy cups with a soft lid.

  • My kids never took to sippy cups.  They know how they just won't use them.

They were around 11 months when they finally just "got" the straw one day.  Of course it was with my Sonic sweet tea, but hey whatever works.  LOL.  Something else you can try with toddler straw cups (the kind that seal at the top) is to suck the liquid up until there's some stuck above the seal.  Maybe if she puts it in her mouth and tastes that little bit at the top, and realizes what's in there, she'll start sucking on the straw to get more?  Other than that, just give it time.  She may just not be ready yet.

  • We removed the stopper inside the sippy cup so milk just flows right out and our baby gulps it up.  She completely skipped the bottle.
  • My pedi told us that it's really important to use a non-spill proof sippy cup. She said otherwise the baby isn't learning anything new. It's just another form of a bottle. I haven't tried this yet, since I'm actually having a hard time finding a sippy cup that isn't spill proof. But just thought I'd share what my pedi told us. I might actually try what a pp said about taking the stopper out of a spill proof cup and see if that works.
