neb help!!

Micah is terrified of the neb and wiggles and worms to get out of it. My DH is at school m-w nights and I'm with him all day and would love to make it through this week with my hair intact. Help please! Any suggestions?

I've tried a book and tv and neither has worked...

Re: neb help!!

  • Do you use the strap? We found it much better to just hold it up to his mouth/nose and not use the strap. Also, we made it an awesome game and put it on me and then dh and then the dogs and talked about how much fun it was. Then we fired up some Curious George and he was fine. Also, you might could throw a blanket or something over the actual unit to muffle the noise a little since it is pretty loud. When all else fails, try lots of rewards like suckers or stickers and lots and lots of praise.

Ds was so scared of it in the pedi's office that it took 3 of us to hold him down and he fought so hard he finally vomited all over the nurse and me.

We did it to Keira's favorite stuffed animal first.  Eventually it became part of the neb routine to do the toy first and then Keira.  We let her hold the mask and walk around with it during the day.  She would hold it up to her face and we would go overboard with praise, hugs, kisses, etc.  Soon it became second nature.  Her current doctors at CHoP prefer using an inhaler with a spacer.  We went through the same screaming/fighting with that, but it eventually became easier.  She seems to actually LIKE it now.  Hang in there!

  • Robbie was terrified of the machine at first. I found if I turned it on in the other room, then brought Robbie in while holding him, he did a lot better. I'd also hold him really close to me with the mask just up to his face (so both are buried in my boobs) and he'd do okay.
These days he brings me a spare mask to put in like it's fun.
  • ask your doc about using an inhaler with an airo chamber. it is sooo much easier and according to our pulmonologist research has shown that the inhaler is just as good when used correctly as the neb.
