WWYD Medela & Any recommended cheaper pumps?

Didnt want to bother the girls on third tri again today so I figured I'd ask here!

I was told not to buy a used pump and I did look up why, also I did see that the medela is open system so its best not to get used.. However!

Option 1: I found a site that sells the Medela PIS New for 217 with 8 dollar shipping..

Option 2: Then I have my target completion coupon %10 off (about $30) then I have a 50 dollar gift card so if I order from target it'll be about 201 or so with free shipping.. (seems kinda like a lot of work and extra money this way just to save 20 more dollars than with option 1..But I think I need someone else to tell me this too before I'm convinced)

Which option would you go with? Going to ask SO also when he wakes up (I hate shopping and try to find the best ways to spend my money.)

And if theres any cheaper pumps that work just as well, I'd love to hear about them.

Adding: I will be going back to work roughly 6 weeks after LO so I'll be using the pump daily..

TIA - Sorry if this seems silly I'd just really like opinions :

  • Option 2 doesn't sound like all that much work to me.  I'd probably go with that one and save the 20 bucks or so.

Good luck with the last weeks of your pregnancy.  Come back here any time - this board is very helpful and supportive!

  • I know a lot of people swear by the Medela pumps, but I balked at the cost and then at my breastfeeding class, they weren't recommended by my MW. I think part of the reason was because of the open system, even if you're buying it new. She recommended the Ameda and Lansinoh pumps (they're the exact same pump). I got the Lansinoh for $103 on Amazon. I've been using it 4 times a day for a month now and I love it. It doesn't have a fancy letdown setting, but I can manually adjust the speed and suction based on what I need at that pumping session which works fine.  Good luck!

This is the second time the Lansinoh was recommended.. I'll check it out as well before I decide, thank you I'll check it out also before I fully decide :)

  • Have you talked to a lactation consultant?  They help people with pump issues all the time, and know what works and doesn't.  I went with the Medela PISA and like it, but wanted a manual so I could pump while I nurse DS.  My LC was able to steer me in the right direction.
  • I have the Ameda purely yours thats been mentioned already.  I have been very happy with it, however don't have anything to compare it to since its the only pump I've ever used.  I use it on average 2 times a day still and haven't had any problems with it.  I think the only con that I have ever come across is that its only available online and any accessories are also only available online.

My DH couldn't believe how much a pump cost!!  The only reason I looked into this was cause of him. lol.  I know medela pumps are good, but there are def. other good options too.

  • I'd probably go with Option 1, if you're deciding between those 2.  The extra $20 wouldn't sway me enough to go with 2.  That gift card/completion coupon definitely will be used for something else!

That said....I have an Ameda Purely Yours and have found it to be just as effective as a Medela I rented in the beginning.  Cost wise it was considerably less than a Medela, so I'm happy with it.  I searched around on the web and found a good deal on the pump, then actually ordered it from diapers.com because they price match (I wasn't familiar w/the website the pump was listed on, so I wanted to go w/a website I knew and trusted).  I got the one w/the backpack and LOVE it but you can save cost by not getting the backpack.  It's very portable, and also will run on batteries if no outlet is available.  It also came w/a car adapter which I haven't used yet, but we have some long car trips coming up so I anticipate using it then.

  • Thanks ladies! I actually did put in an order for the Ameda online at amazon but woke up to an e-mail saying they canceled the order because someone stole parts from it Confused Was an awesome deal too but I think I'm set on that one after not being able to find any bad reviews! Aside from noise and the parts being online only as mentioned.. So I'll try and find a good deal ;)

    Thanks again Big Smile

  • Option 2.  Between gift cards and coupons I paid about $110 for the PISA which would have been the cost of a cheaper brand pump so that was a good deal.
