Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Thinking of Making the Switch...(attention cloth diaperers)

to cloth diapers. I read this article today and feel kind of forced to. I hate Huggies. She gets rashes from Pampers baby dry. We thought we'd be in Swaddlers for at least another month until going to cruisers. Now that cruisers are all drymax as are swaddlers I'm trying to investigate the cost effectiveness of cloth diapering. I don't mind the extra work as long as she doesn't end up with a chemical burn, rash, or irritation.

I'm trying to research options but it's kind of overwhelming. How many diapers do I buy? (About how many do you use per day?)

She's just starting size 3 diapers so how many of other sizes will I need to buy?

What brand/type of cloth diaper do you use?

What kind of pail system works for you?

  • I just wrote in my blog about this.  I recommend asking this question on the Eco-Friendly board. Those mamas will help immensely!! Good luck

  • I JUST went through this last week! We went and got prefolds with thristies duo wrap covers for at-home useage (weekends/nighttime/etc.) and bumgenius 3.0 pockets for him at daycare. We got 12 pockets for daycare b/c they are super easy to use for our dc lady, the same effort and process as disposables only she puts them in the washable bag so I can clean them at home that night. He usually gets changed 5-6 times per day so 12 gave me just enough leeway to wash them every other day. The prefold are great b/c you can really pack on the protection for nighttime and they are easier/cheaper for me to use when I'm home. I'd suggest finding somewhere nearby you where you can see different types of CD's in person and maybe even see them demonstrated. Thats what we did and it was well worth the time! GL!!!
  • Starter information:

I use BumGenius 3.0s they adjust in size with snaps and adjust in width with velcro.  The velcro wears after awhile, but the effectiveness is still good enough for me.  I have had zero leaks with these diapers - even overnight.  We have 24 3.0s and I do laundry every other day.  I use plastic bags to store dirty diapers - they're arm & hammer deodorized baggies while on the go, and I have a "trash can" in DS' room for any diapers at home.  I would get at least 24, but we've survived the last 3 1/2 months with just this stash and never had a problem.  I keep disposables in the house just in case.  Haven't even opened the box yet.  I use baby washcloths as wipes, we have 30 of those and that works out great.  Once they're used they go into the diaper and into the wash still inside the diaper - never have to touch the poopy wipe.

One word of caution - buy new diaper rash cream just in case LO does end up with a rash, or if you just use it as a barrier.  The zinc oxide based butt creams will decrease the absorbency of the diapers.  Get something else.

  • There are lots of options

Prefolds/covers- cheapest, but people either love them or hate them. Can be tough with a squirmy kiddo

Fitteds/covers-this is personally what I use, I have fitteds that have snaps (Mother ease Sandy's , they are work horse diapers and many mom's have had them last through 3+ kids!)

Pockets- has a waterproof outer and then you stuff the pocket to make it absorbant.Dry faster than AIO's

AIO(All in ones)- has everything all in one, water proof outer, absorbant inner, can have snaps or velcro, is most like a disposable as far as ease of putting it on. If your kiddo is in daycare they will likely want you to use these while your kiddo is there. These are also the most expensive

There are also one size diapers in fitteds, pockets and AIO's

We use a dry pail (actually it's a hanging wet bag) and we love it.

We use probably 6-8 a day depending on when she poops (if I just put a clean one on).

They are so easy and I love them!

  • Regarding the cost effectiveness, we figured by 3 months we would have spent $200 on disposables, and we spent about that on CDs, so we're dead even at this point...

Scattering off to read your blog.. :)

  • So I don't have to write it out every time someone asks me how we do our CDs, I put a page about it on my blog

    Good luck!  It's really fun!

  • We use the BumGenius 3.0. they are one-size pockets, and we love them! We use a diaper pail and an old pillowcase, and just wash it with the diapers. We only have 12, I would like to get about 3 more, but I do laundry every other day or every 3 days. We paid something like $200 for the 12 and it has been well worth it. plus they hold in her poop a lot better than disposables!
  • I read another post by another mama about the new Pampers... sounds like P&G dropped the ball on this one.

As far as CDing goes... We started with about 24 diapers. I've bought a few more cute ones here and there, and we're probably up to about 36 or so now (is it sad that I have no clue exactly how many I have?)

She would fit in a medium size right now- most babies fit mediums for a long time. I like the one-sized diapers, which snap smaller and unsnap to become longer in the rise, which allows you to have one diaper for (hopefully!) all of your time CDing.

I use a variety. I started with 3 that I had researched and decided I'd like to try: Smartipants (which are a sleeve pocket w/ a microfiber insert), Gro-Baby (which have organic cotton and we actually use for our nighttime diaper), and BumGenius Organic One Sized AIO, which are my faves. Those make up the bulk of our stash. I have a couple of fitted diapers and some wool soakers and longies (pants), but we don't use them often- the AIO's are just easier. I might wind up re-selling them (I purchased them used). I found some cute covers on www.hyenacart.com from Mudshrimps, and use an insert called a rad rag in those- I'm actually planning on custom ordering a few more of these covers because they're too adorable. I also have a few Bumpkins AIO's that I like- they seem really big though, but fit DD alright.

As far as our pail system- we just use a natural baby co. wetbag, and stick the diapers in there- she's still just EBF'd, so we don't have to worry about spraying her diapers off or anything, which makes things much easier. I'm not particularly looking forward to starting solids. A lot of ladies swear by Planet Wise hanging wetbags. I have a Planet Wise wet/dry bag that I use in the diaper bag that is fantastic.

Hyena cart and Etsy are good places to find CD's made by small businesses. www.jilliansdrawers.com has a good CD trial, where you can test out several different types of CD's for $10 out of your pocket if you decide it's not for you. www.diaperswappers.com is a good place to find used CD's- I've actually gotten quite a few brand spanking new and considerably less than I would have paid retail.

It's totally overwhelming at first, but once you read and start pieceing things together, it becomes addicting and fun. :)

  • try the jilliansdrawers trial maybe that will help!
