Parenting after a Loss

Ummmm...tons of milk...

Soooooo, I know some of you might hate me by the end of this post, buuuuut....

My LO is 7 months old and on a LOT of regular foods.  The problem is, I have an entire deep 6 ft deep freezer that's full of breastmilk.  Plus what's in the regular freezer.  If I were to stop BF now, based on his diet, at a year, he would most likely only have made it through what's in our regular freezer.

I know at a year, they are on whole milk, so what in the world am I going to do with the extra milk?  It would break my heart to throw it away.  I know there's donation, but I thought you needed to be approved ahead of time for that.

Oh, and by the way, MOO.

  • Ha ha.  So incredibly jealous.  I have about 15 ounces of frozen milk, literally. :)  I'm not sure how donating it works, but I would definitely look into it and see if it is a possibility.  Good work getting so much stored!

You don't have to switch to cow's milk at a year, it's just that you can. You can certainly keep giving him BM after one year.

    This.

Also, I'm jealous too. I have about 35 oz in the freezer and that might be an over-estimation.  Although I would not want to throw it out either so I don't really envy that part of it.

  • I looked into donation but they wouldn't take what was already frozen because I couldn't be certain I hadn't taken any ibuprophen or had too much caffiene that day.

  • Research carefully before you consider BM donation. Many milk banks accept donations and then sell the BM for profit. Even the non-profit ones have some potential issues... They want you to be tested for things like HTLV - with uncertain clinical consequences but potential insurance ramifications.
