Preemies

when did your preemie go on to any sort of finger food?

My babies are over 8 months old now.  I've had them on solids since 5 months old.  They've tried everything that it puree.  I've tried recently to thicken things more and they don't like it (they've done stage 2 and some 3's).  Not really gagging but they don't like it.  Should I just drop it and try again another time?  Should I try putting a few cheerios or yogurt melts on their highchairs and let them try it out?  I tried a yogurt melt a few weeks ago, I broke each one into pieces even.  My son did OK with it my daughter didn't.  I just don't know how to transition to chunkier.  How will I know when they are ready?  How do I do this?  How do they know to "gum" food? They eat so much, three meals a day at least a jar each and 4 bottles a day.

  • My advice is to back off on how much you're feeding them in terms of the solids. They need more milk, less solids (solids are for play and experience, not nutrition at this age). Try doing just half a jar at each meal and see if they're only taking 1/2 a jar if they're more accepting of thicker food. DS has loved his solids, but only recently did I start the puffs. He was interested in my food, so I started with tiny pieces of soft bread at first (I was eating sandwiches in front of him and he wanted to try). If they ignore the little bits on their tray, that's fine. Just keep offering. Starting with plain white bread bits (no crust pieces) means it won't be wasting money and you can just keep offering until they want them. They're not behind at all. GL!

Thanks.  One reason they have reduced to 4 bottles a day (and that's difficutl, they really only want 3) is because they have lost interest in the bottle (only want it before bedtime and naps) and love solids.  They won't settle for a 1/2 jar!  I've tried all this.  But I'll try the 1/2 jar of thicker foods instead.  Thanks again.

  • J has days that he's super excited about finger foods and days that he really could care less.  We offer him lots of different things (whatever veggies we're having for dinner, toast etc.).  He'll eat the baby "mum-mum's" and teething biscuts just about any time we offer those but not always the grown up food.  He LOVES his purees and goes back and forth on his milk intake.  (more milk when he's teething/not feeling well/tired and more "real" food when he's happy/got a good nap)  At this point it's really just to play/experience different textures.

  • I tried puffs and they now love them.  At first I had to help them put it in their mouths.  But now they are able to do it themselves.  They are not fans of the yogurt melts.  Have you tried actual yogurt?  We are going to try real table food this weekend.  Should be interesting.
