Babies: 0 - 3 Months

BFing first week - questions.

Hi all. So I decided to BF and it is gonig well, at least I think. She feeds at least 8 times a day, usually more, but only for 15-25 min each session - does that sound long enough? I usually only do one boob a session b/c she tires out and there is jsut no waking her - is THAT ok?

?

Also, I? have one boob with engorement - I pumped and it go a bit better but it's still pretty hard - any tips?

?

?

Thanks!?

  • How's her weight?  I'd use that to judge whether or not you should be waking her up to eat more.  If she's gaining at a nice steady rate, she's doing well and you don't have to worry about how long she eats.

  • DS is the same way and has been since he was born. He very rarely nurses both sides in a session and he only nurses for 15 minutes max. As long as she's gaining properly and has enough poopy/wet diapers, she'll be fine. You might want to keep a diaper log for a few days just in case.

  • If you can't get her weighed (I know I couldn't get my son weighed), then do a diaper log.  An EBF baby under 1 month should have at least 3 poopy diapers per day that are yellowish (this can vary) and bigger in size than a quarter.  Most babies will have tons more than this.  Also, she should have at least 5 wet diapers per day (sufficiently wet for a newborn = a diaper with 3 tbsp. of water in it, if you're curious).

Seth rarely ate for more than 20 minutes total, usually 10-15 min. total.  I was terrified I was starving him!  Turns out he was just very efficient :)

  • Oh, and as for engorgement... it's kind of a fact of life those first couple of weeks :-/  Nurse as much as possible and if you're still in a lot of pain, pump off enough to make you comfortable.  You don't want to pump too much off because it makes your body think that you need to have that much milk so you'll keep making that much and keep getting engorged.  Putting hot compresses or taking a hot shower before nursing or pumping will help prevent clogged ducts and mastitis if you're engorged.
