Babies: 9 - 12 Months

** update*** my LO swallowed a small piece of a magnent (i think)

i know it sounds awful.  hear me out.  so many things going on right now.  today's my birfday (woopdie doo) and my dad called this morning to wish me HB...  and reluctantly told me that his neighbors set his truck and washroom/shed on fire (which he built on his own)...  total loss...    all b/c he called the cops for a noise complaint.  so i'm here... trying to get laundry done...  dishes done... pack... etc...  so we can go out for moral support...  which is about a 6 hour drive.  my dad couldve died!!  anyway... LO was on the floor playing with some magnets...    one is a basket ball the other is a butterfly...   flat magnet...    i noticed the bottom part of the butterfly wing is gone... it's REALLY small... but it's gone... and i'm freaking out...   do you think he'll pass it?!?!    its about the size of a sunflower seed...  holy cow...   of all days...  why?!

UPDATE:

********* OMG

i found the magnet!!!      i spilled water near the fridge so i wiped it up with a paper towel...   after sitting on the floor feeling SO awful something told me to look in the trash... and there it was, in the paper towel...  what a CLOSECALL...   goodbye magnets...   they're going in the trash.   i dont think i've ever felt so awful...     guess i have a lifetime of those moments to look forward to, huh?

THANK YOU so much for your quick advice...

  • you need to call your pediatrician right now!
  • Loading the player...
  • Was it actual magnet material he swallowed or just a piece of the front part?

Not to freak you out, but I've heard that swallowing magnets is really bad - if it was just one it might be ok, but if kids swallow more than one they can actually get crimps in their intestines from the magnets contacting each other. You need to call your pedi - good luck!

  • Call the pedi.

If he swallowed 2 peices they could lock up together in 2 different spots of his intestines causing them to bind up.

What he was playing with was not ok, magnets are very dangerous! They can kill. Sorry this happened and also for what happened to your dad.

  • I would definitely call the pedi!

  • the paper part/ design part is still there... the magnet is gone.  oh, i forgot to mention... he finally cut his first tooth last friday so that little sucker caused it to break.  i wasn't thinking...  ughhh
  • call pedi now because that can be really dangerous if he has swalled by chance 2 magnets.  It can cause a bowel obstruction.

This! I saw it on an episode of "Your Kid Ate What?"

Better to call and be wrong.

  • I'm gathering these magnets are like business card magnets you get from pizza places and what not?  I would definitely call the pedi but I wouldn't freak because there needs to be more than one magnet to cause problems if that makes sense.  I'd call though and next time keep ALL magnets far far away from LO's.  I don't even let DS play with magnets.
  • Call your pedi.

You'll need to take him to somewhere they can take an x-ray.  Don't freak out, it's not going to do anything harmful right away, but if he did swallow the magnet, they need to know an plan a course of action.  I think with a magnet they usually let it pass, but it depends on the size, etc.

Per my pedi, any object that LO swallows is usually ok to wait for it to pass, except for a magnet or battery.

Don't feel bad, my DS did somethign similar about 2 months ago.  He was playing on the kitchen floor when I was cooking and I saw him place a small magnet in his mouth!  I freaked out - didn't see it on the floor, somehow someone must have knocked it off the fridge?  (We keep our magnets above DS' reach)  I quickly got the magnet out of his mouth, when I noticed the magnet part was not attached.  I couldn't find it, so I had to take him in.  We went to urgent care (because my pedi's ofc doesn't have an xray) and they x-rayed him.  Turned out that he hadn't swallowed the magnet, that was a relief...

  • I would call pedi to be on the safe side. Thats what they are there for.  Magnets look fun but can be very dangerous.
  • Not flaming because you are having a bad enough day, but NEVER let your child play with magnets - agree with the others, call the pedi.  I hope everything works out with your dad and your LO!

Do NOT feel awful, these things happen!  SO glad you found the magnet!

  • Whew! I am glad you found the magnet!
  • I really glad you found it.  Just move all of the fridge magents up to the top third of the fridge and you should be a little safer.
