NMR: My dad has prostate cancer

He called me last night after he received the biopsy results.  We have dealt with cancer in my family before but not prostate and not my dad!

They said it is a level 6 on the scale of 1 to 10 and he is being referred to an oncologist for radiation.

I am sharing this with you girls b/c you have been my support system through pregnancy and the first year of my boys life and I am nervous about this.  Anyone have experience with this in your family?

  • I'm so sorry. My prayers are with your dad and your family.

My grandfather had prostate cancer. He was in his late 70's at the time and they implanted radioactive seeds into his prostate that got rid of the cancer. I don't believe they will do this with younger patients because they don't know the long term side effects but he is still with us today and he is 86 years old and cancer free.

  • Aww T & P, that sucks. My dad had prostate cancer too- we went to like 5 different doctors to get their opinion on what the best route would be. My dad did awesome for the first couple of years and we were really hopeful but unfortunately his was a 9/10 when he started treatment.

My suggestion is to get as much information as you can so you understand whats going on with him and of course value all the time you have together.  Im sure he'll do great keep your chin up and focus on all the positives in your live!!!  If you ever want to talk about it PM me.

  • He lives about 2 hours from me so I can't wait to pack up my boys and drive down there for a big hug!  Thanks for all the hugs and supportive messages - that is exactly what I needed!

  • Same exact thing here...my dad was even a 6 as well!  He opted to go with radiation and seed implantation.  I'm sure the oncologist will go over all of his options with him.  We  really wanted my dad to just have it removed and be done but he didn't want to do that.  He will probably have a couple scans soon to see if it has spread...thankfully my dads did not.  So that's where we are.  He's done really well with radation with minimal side effects.  My t&p are with your family.

  • my father was recently diagnosed with a 4/5.  my father had his choice of a seed implantation, radiation, surgery or nothing.  he's going to be implanted with the seed i think next month, which sucks because i can't go within 5 feet of him for 3 months and i work with him.

he's in for some not fun times but prostate cancer, when found early, had a great prognosis.  please keep us updated.

    hugs to you!

  • so sorry!  my mom's boyfriend was diagnosed several years ago.  he has strong family history (father & brother) and had stopped going for his twice yearly check-ups.  sadly, he didn't catch it early enough.  don't know the # 1-10, but they said it was terminal, and he had 6mos... that was a few years ago!  he focuses on positive things in his life, travels as much as he can, really enjoys music.  pain management is a big part of his life of course.

hugs to you, as i'm sure this is scary.  like pp said, find out as much as you can.  hope your dad has a speedy recovery!

My grandpa has prostate cancer- stage 2 when he was 65.  He went through 2 rounds of radiation and went into remission.  It never came back (he passed away in January from pneumonia)

  • My T&P are w/ you. My dad just went for the results of his first blood test after the surgery and the results were good. He got his removed. I tried to talk him out of it b/c of the possible side effects and I wanted him to get a 2nd opinion. He said he's 70+ and doesn't need his prostate. His surgery went well but he's still wearing depends. The Dr. said he should regain bladder control in the next few month. Other than that, he's back to his old self.

If you're the primary care taker, remember to take care of yourself.

  • My dad does, too.   He just found out a few weeks ago, and goes in to have his prostate removed in June.  His is a gleason grade 7/10.  Still, the prognosis is generally pretty good.

    Hang in there.

  • I don't have experience with prostate cancer but I have been diagnosed 3x in the past 4 years with a rare sarcoma.  Radiation is pretty easy compared to chemo.  It's not a walk in the park, but it's definitely doable.

Praying for you and your family.
