Help, I am at the end of my rope!

My one year old has a NEED to climb.  We have tried everything from redirecting, moving furniture, etc and he still figures out someway to climb,  This morning he pushed a bucket over to the sink and climbed up and then used his toes, HIS TOES, to stand on the edge of the cabinet doors.  Yes, he is 1.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to deal with this addiction he has?!? ;)

Oh and the best part, he refuses to climb on playground equipment.....I have tried that.  Any ideas?!?!

  • I have thought about one of those zap collars that you use on dogs!  :) jk but yes, I am praying it is a phase but he was out of his crib at a year because he kept climbing out.

  • I have no advice. Emilia is a climber. She manages to climb on to the kitchen table on a daily basis. I have had to block off my kitchen, my couches, any chairs and have now had to close the door to her room because she wants to climb back into her crib and jump or onto her dresser.

I swear to god she is going to give me a heart attack.

  • Not sure if you want to encourage this, but before we got new furniture I would put the sofa cushions/pillows on the floor and let DS climb around on them.  He went through this phase too, and it helped on rainy days when he was literally climbing the walls!
  • Pin- that is EXACTLY how I feel.  I know he is going to be on the roof before he is 2!

  • Yikes! You have your hands full! Hopefully, it is just a phase that will end very soon for your own sanity!
  • Not to scare you but, I have a dear friend who went through this last year.  They went to the pool and he opened a cabinet to climb onto something, slipped, and tore his little scrottum (sp?) almost off!  He is totally fine now, but, ugh....When Emerson becomes mobile, I'm going to be a nut case following her!

  • What about setting up a safe place in the house for him to climb?  At DD's old center, they had a set up with large foam blocks for them to climb.  This is it, but it's crazy expensive.  https://www.creativityinstitute.com/childrensfactoryschoolagetunnelclimberplaysetshipfree.aspx

You could probably put something together with thick matts and soft climbing blocks.

  • My DS is a total climber! It drives me nuts!! But what I've found out about him is that if he thinks or sees that there is something interesting say in a cabinet or on a shelf that is when he climbs. So I've been trying to remind myself to not put things away in front of him that I know he'll want. Yesterday he was throwing his trains so I put them on the top shelf of his hutch....came back 10 minutes later and he was standing on top of the dresser trying to reach them!! That was a surprise. The more time passes, the more adventurous he seems to get...Good luck!!
