When should a toddler go to just one nap?

My 16-month-old still takes a morning nap.  When should I expect him to drop it (or try to get him to drop it)?

He just started STTN this week (thank GOD) -- he sleeps 7:30pm to 7am.  He naps in the morning for about an hour and then in the afternoon for about two.

Re: When should a toddler go to just one nap?

  • Mine both outgrew it fully by about 14-15 months. However, if he's still napping regularly AND more importantly, he's STTN - then don't push him to change. There's nothing wrong with sleeping a lot!!

  • DD, also 16 months, stopped her morning nap right at 12 months. I think DS was closer to 15 months when he dropped his.
  • at 24 months my dd stopped napping all together. I forget when she went to one nap.
  • If he still takes 2 naps, I'd let him.  DS stopped with his morning nap between 14-16 months.  As long as it isn't affecting his nighttime sleeping, I see no harm in it.

  • I think DS was around 18mths. He actually dropped his afternoon nap and then I slowly transitioned his morning nap until he was finally going down after lunch time.

  • DD outgrew it at 14 months, DS was more around 16 months.  Basically, what it came down to for both of them was that their morning nap started to become 2 - 2 1/2 hours and then they couldn't fall asleep in the afternoon.  So, I knew it was time to start trying just one nap.
