Baby Names

I wish more people were familiar with Isla

I'm being so indecisive about girls names.  We're finding out what we're having so I may not even need to worry about it but in the meantime I can't stop trying to come up with them.

I really like Isla (eye-la) but most people say iss-la.  It goes nice with our last name too.

Random whine.  I'm done.

Re: I wish more people were familiar with Isla

  • I know it's Eye-la but every time I see it, I instantly think of "La Isla Bonita" by Madonna...

HAHA oh my god that takes me back!

I just think it's such a pretty name.  And there's Lila but that's so popular now.  Siiiigh.  I'll just complain until we find out its a boy Wink

  • I have a friend that just named her little girl this...I constantly screw up and say EE-lah though (like how you would pronounce Ilsa de Margarita sort of thing).

  • Isla is ok, and I say it as eye-la, but it always looks like "Island" unfinished. The lack of letters on the end is annoying.

  • I can't help but pronounce it ee-sla ...as in Isla Sorna & Isla Nubar from the Jurassic Park movies lol :) But I do think it's lovely! It's gaining in popularity- so the pronunciation problem might go away eventually.
  • I understand completelySmile

It hasnt been bad at all telling people how to pronounce it and with all "new" names it just takes a little while to become familiar.  I think it is such a pretty name.

  • It makes me think of Dora the Explorer's iguana friend Isa.
  • I have a friend whose daughter is Ayla. It's Turkish, I believe, and pronounced eye-la, like you like.
  • I'm a big fan of comedies and Isla Fisher is one of my favorite actresses!  I think popularity is gaining, so pronunciation issues will fade away...

  • We named our son Declan.  Even I, at first glance, read it as "de-clan".  And I know many other people who pronounced it that way at first.

But once I say "Deck-lyn", people get it and it's not an issue.

Dont' let the pronunciation keep you from using it. People will clue in quick enough. Trust me"

  • I've heard of it! Isn't there a pretty famous actress named Isla Fisher? She may spell it different, but that girl from Wedding Crashers! I really like it!

  • I think it's one of those names that once you tell people how it's pronounced they'll remember. I think it's pretty.

  • It's a beautiful name -- and people will start catching on more and more (prominent stars like Isla Fisher will help with this).

There's also people like me who will always correct people if they're saying a name wrong. A co-worker of mine just told me that her neice was naming her daughter "Iss-la" and I blurted out the correct pronounciation before she even got another word in! haha

  • I much prefer Isla pronounced as the Spanish word (ees-la). Eye-la sounds very awkward. Like you started saying Island and then didn't finish saying it.
  • I met a nurse whose name was Isla, but it was spelled  Ila.

    Maybe that would help?

  • I think it's a gorgeous name!  In school, I had a TA named Yla, pronounced the same, but I am definitely partial to Isla.  It's classic and beautiful.
  • I'm a big fan of classic/traditional names, but I actually think Isla is pretty. I definitely see the appeal, but I agree that the pronunciation issue would be annoying.
  • Ayla is another way to spell the same name.  it's Hebrew and pronounced the same wayl.

  • Love, love Isla.  It was my girl name this time around, but I have had two ultrasounds that have confirmed we were having a boy.  Our boy name will require some pronunciation as Isla would too, I'm not concerned.  I agree with others too, Isla is gaining popularity and may not need much pronunciation help eventually.
  • So, someone reads it once and says Iss-la...you or your daughter correct them and that's that.  Not a big deal.  People have been pronouncing my name wrong my whole life and it's not even difficult.
