I was sitting here thinking it was going to be just like the 1-hour (fast, drink a small bottle of nasty sugar drink, sit and wait, have blood drawn) except this time I would have to wait 3 hours instead of one.
I'm getting some feedback on Facebook that is suggesting it's not quite like that. So how was the 3-hour test for you? What did it involve?
I'm hearing stories of vomiting, blood being drawn every hour, passing out and not being allowed to pee for 3 hours... please tell me it's not that bad! Of course if it is, tell me the truth.
Re: Talk to me about the 3-hour test please.
Oh and bring a good book.
Here was my experience:
Fast overnight after 10 pm.
Arrive (just before 10 am): draw blood to check if my levels were ok to start the test.
Drink nasty bottle of lemon-lime glucose syrup. (while being watched)
Then draw blood each hour for 3 more draws. They alternated and drew twice from each arm. One arm bruised slightly. =(
After the 3 hours I was allowed to leave. I had no problems with vomiting. They never said anything about not peeing. They said I could drink water, just no other food/beverages in that 3 hour period.
Overall, not terrible, just a bit boring. I brought Sudoku puzzles and knitting to keep occupied.
You go in, they draw your blood, you drink the drink...then get your blood drawn every hour for 3 hours.
I never vomited or passed out. Just bring your book or ipod or whatever and sit and wait.
I drank the drink, same drink same quanity, and had my blood taken 3 times. Once an hour.
It wasn't fun, but it wasn't too terrible. Ditto bringing a book or something to do, 'cuz you'll be there awhile.
I made a bunch of my daycare interviews that day from their office

50mg for 1 hour, 75mg for 2 hour (this is the diabetes test, not GD), and 100mg for 3 hour
Ditto everyone else...you go in, get a blood draw and then you drink the drink in front of them as soon as you are finished they start your time. You go back every hour and get another draw, they alternated arms for me also. After 3 hours (so 4 total draws) you are free to go.
I was not allowed water, but I was allowed to go pee (though I didn't need to since I had not had anything but the glucose to drink).
I brought my laptop with the movie Amelie...floated through the time quickly that way.
Money Matters The other half's blog.
EJ is growing up too fast!
I had my test at CHOMP. Where are you going? They were really great. I did not pass and well did expirence some discomfort but nothing super dramatic. I was a little dizzy, shaky and had a headache. I was allowed water and the bathroom. There was a choice of 3 nasty flavors of the drink. 4 total blood draws. First one was before I drank the nasty stuff. They gave me a chart and sent me out in the lobby. I had to remind them 5 min before it was time to draw my blood once an hour for 3 hours.
I was asked to fast after 10pm so I made an apt for as early as they would let me. I think it was at 8am or earlier. I took some stuff to entertain myself. It is not too bad.
This exactly, except that it was french toast at Hobee's afterwards instead of cookies
I made friends with the other pg ladies there doing the same thing. DH came with me, which was nice of him. I brought my laptop and Nested/Bumped the entire time (they had wifi).
