Used breat pump question

So yesterday when I was out with a friend, she mentioned that she saw I was registered for the exact breat pump she has siting in her closet. She said she only used it for 2 weeks when she was trying to breastfeed her son but gave up. She offered to give it to me. She's very clean and particular about things so I'm not worried. I thought GREAT! save me $280.

Well last night at my breastfeeding class, the instructor said to never share breast pumps even if a friend or relative has one to use. This is a bad idea because they could back up and even if you sterilized the parts there could be problems that you could give your baby such as HIV, hepatitis, or other infections.

So my question to you all is...what should I do? Do I save the $280 and use the pump anyway or do I buy my own?

Re: Used breat pump question

  • Not sure what you registered for but the lansinoh pumps don't allow milk to flow into the tubes.  with most pumps you can buy replacement parts so you may want to see what that will cost.  I bought my pump from craigslist but it was still sealed.

  • I'm using a breastpump that I bought from a friend-of-a-friend for $60, and I haven't had any troubles. My midwife told me that it really doesn't matter, as long as everything is clean. I washed everything in hot, soapy water before I used it.

  • If you know this person pretty well, you can use the pump with hardly no issues. I would just get new tubing, connectors, collection containers, horns, etc. All the LCs I have talked to said if you know the person pretty well, there shouldn't be any issues.

Especially since she has hardly used it, the motor isn't worn out. So it should be a good deal for you!

I borrowed this same pump from a friend. I bought my own tubing, etc. and just use the actual pump from her.

  • I have a pump that I got from my sister. I just sterilized the parts she gave me and used them as back ups. I bought new parts to use regularly. I have not had any problems with it. The pump is about 6 years old now and still seems to work fine. I would take your friends.
