Preemies

3 meds at once for reflux??

The gastro wants mak on prevacid, erythromyacin, and bethanechol for her reflux. This seems like A LOT of meds for a 6 month old to be on, what do yall think? The ph probe study results indicated that she has significant reflux and problems with the acid hanging around in her tummy too long. I know thats a problem. But does it really take 3 different meds to fix it? We have her on liquid concentrate nutramigen and she seems now like she is better than she has been in a very long time! They wanted to put her back on elecare and that's where I drew the line. I'm not paying $200 a case for formula that she hates. I am just now to the point that she enjoys a bottle after forcing that stuff down her for two weeks. It seems like they are making this more complex than it seems to be, did/does anyone else feel that way about their refluxers?

  • DS is on prevacid and pepcid and for several months also took reglan for his reflux.  We have tried just the prevacid when he was 5 months old and he was in so much pain that he stopped eating and we ended up in the er and the GI said that some kids require more than one medication since the prevacid and pepcid work different (prevacid stops the acid and the pepcid neutralizes the acid that is still produced).  We tried to wean to just the prevacid again a few months ago and while he didn't completely stop eating this time he was in a lot of pain until we restarted the pepcid.  GL!

  • Andrew is on Prilosec and erythromyacin, and his reflux is still really bad.

We weren't sure if he needed the erythromyacin so we stopped it (w/ the doctor's support) and it was a big fat fail.  We're now back on it.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't say this is uncommon for preemies, but it does suck really bad :(

  • Uggghhhhhh, I hope you can sense my dramaticism. So frustrating!!! And it's so much more frustrating to see that your kids are over a year old and STILL dealing with it! Great! I haven't slept well in over a year due to 1) IVF and hyperstimulation 2) Preg w/ twins and complicated pregnancy 3) Born early and up pumping at all hours of the night 4) Now Mak has reflux and has slept through the night only TWICE. I'm about to crater.
  • I'm sorry :(:( Pedis made it sounds like most reflux goes away at 6 months and for sure by a year - I never thought I'd make it...and it still isn't gone :(

Hang in there. I know it sucks!!!!!

  • Yep I most definitely got that impression too. I'm just so exhausted. My husband works out of town so I have pretty much no help, occasionally I have help in the day time but never at night. I just want some sleep and to wake up and it all be gone!
  • Have you ever looked into the AR pillow?  We bought it for DS when he was about 8 months old and too old to sleep in his bouncy seat or infant seat.  It worked wonders because it allowed him to be at a 30 degree angle and he was strapped in so that he didn't slide down.
  • Haven't heard about that one. I will look it up! I tried inclining her bed but she slid down. She sleeps on her tummy so she slides down in the nap nanny too. Does the AR pillow allow for tummy sleeping?
