Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Do you let your 6 month old sleep on their belly?

Luckily, my son prefers his side but every now and then he'll roll over to his belly and it makes me so NERVOUS. My husband insists that he's fine but I can't relax unless I flip him back over. Mind you, we have an Angelcare monitor so I don't know why I can't trust it. I'm just psycho-mommy, I guess.Tongue Tied

Do you let your 6 month old baby sleep on his/her belly?

  • I did and still do. Once LO can roll from tummy to back, back to tummy, it's okay to let them sleep on their tummy.

  • Once she could roll both ways easily I tried to relax about DD sleeping on her tummy.  She occasionally did at 6 months but she has slept on her belly since 8 months and still does.  It took me a while to relax but the risk of SIDS goes down significantly at 6 months, so that helped me.

  • I let her sleep on her tummy from 3 weeks old. It made me so nervous, but she was much happier like that.

  • I don't.  She only just started doing it every once in a while and it freaks me out.

  • Can he roll both ways?  I think if he can roll over then he's fine.  He'll be able to move his head if he needs to.  DD sleeps on her stomach about 75% of the time now (and sometimes with her face straight into the mattress).  It makes me nervous sometimes too, but logically, I know she's fine.

  • Yep. Pediatrician said as long as they have good head control it's fine.

this. And you really don't have control over it unless you spend the night watching. You'll get used to it.

ditto.  Drew started rolling to his stomach to sleep right around 6 months.  I was so thankful b/c he sleeps much better that way!

  • he started rolling to his belly at 3.5 months. there was no way to stop him. he just rolled right back. he's been fine since then.
  • He has been rolling over since about 5 months but he has been rolling both ways since about 2 weeks ago.

  • DD's been sleeping on her belly since 4 months.
  • Yes, I did. It made me nervous too at first and I still can't go to sleep without checking on him. But he has been sleeping on his side/belly since he was about 4 months old (he would roll himself over) and now it is what he prefers.

  • G sleeps like a mad woman in her crib. ?She is everywhere. ?If I was to move her she would just go right back to sleeping with her butt in the air. ?

  • Is their head completely turned to the side? When I go check on him, his head is turned to the side but not fully so one nostril is completely smushed while half of the other is open. THAT is what makes me nervous.

  • I was a wreck too, but she sleeps better on her belly. My pedi told me not to worry. She said that "if you would put your hand over her face she would fight you; she will move if her breathing is hindered in any way." (maybe not her exact words but you get the point!) Good luck!!

BTW, I turned the monitor up really loud so I could hear her breathing for a couple weeks until I got comfortable with it.

I start her off on her back, but she always rolls to her belly at some point. I let her because if I roll her over, she wakes up.

  • Thanks for asking this - our lo has recently started doing this, and it really freaks me out.  I have let her do it - dh insists it is ok!  She rolls easily from front to back/back to front.
  • According to the SIDS experts, once they have the ability to roll over they have enough head control that you don't have to worry about it.

THIS.  I've been following SIDS research for the past 15 years, and have reached out to the SIDS organization on more than one occassion.  The rule is that you put your baby to sleep on their belly, and if they roll you let them sleep in whatever position they put themselves in.  Once a baby can roll 360 degrees it is extremely unlikely for a baby to die of SIDS.

DD learned to roll on her 3 monthday. She's been sleeping on her belly (and STTN) ever since.

  • DS has been sleeping on his belly since 5 months. He rolls around way to much. When he is on his belly he always has his head tilt to the side, so I know he is able to breathe.

  • yes, she sleeps so much better that way.  she can lift her head and move it from side to side so I'm comfortable with her sleeping on her belly, especially since the mattress is so firm and there isn't anything in the bed with her that could obstruct her breathing.

  • DD has always been on her belly.  She won't sleep any other way.  I do check on her several times, only cover her with a crochet blanket, and keep the fan on.

  • I never put either of my LOs down on their belly, but if they roll that way, then I tried not to worry.  It's important to always lay them down on their belly, but once they can roll both ways, there's no need to flip them back if they roll.  For other safe sleep tips, go to: https://www.halosleep.com/keep_your_baby_safe/safe_sleep_tips/
