I want to make a fire engine cake for my son's 2nd birthday. I've got my design all worked out, I'm just wondering the best way to achieve truly red icing. I'm assuming that if I use regular red food coloring in white icing it is gonna look more pink than red. Can anyone tell me how or where to get truly red icing?
Re: Cake decorating question
The only way I have ever seen truly red icing is if you buy it already mixed-like from a bakery. (I'm not sure if a local baking shop would have as much as you would need.) The thing is, is that red icing tastes bitter. They do have these things though from wilton now that are like airbrush in a can. I'm not sure if they make red or not, but it's a suggestion.
How much time do you have before you need to make the cake because I know the dye that works pretty well for red, but you need to order it online. I will see if I can find you a link and post it.
I prefer chef master liqua gel colors. Here is the link:

I like americolor, but not as much. Always get the red red and not super red or christmas red. And definitely mix the color the night before like previous poster said because the color will get more intense.
