question for moms...belly binding

Did any of you use a hip/belly binder (shrinkx or belly bandit, etc) after delivery? If so:  Did it work for you? Where did you buy yours?

I am interested in them and if they work but I would like to know before dropping $65 on a piece of cloth :)

Did any of your hospitals give you a version of one without a c section?

Thanks!

Actually, while I'm at it, did any of you use the itzbeen timer or milk band reminder bracelets? Sorry for all the questions, but since its getting closer I am wondering what all else I "need" to go get!  Wink

  • I've never heard of any of them...
  • Belly binding is usually a cultural thing, but I've never heard any reports that it actually makes any difference.

You don't NEED a special timer. It might be a nice gizmo but not necessary. I guess if you want your baby to be that regimented you can try it.

If you need a reminder for which side you fed on last, you can just as easily use any bracelet or a hair band.

I'd say save the money, you don't NEED any of these things.

  • We just had a huge discussion about this on our local twin board.  Some twin moms use them to help with diastasis, but most get good results from physical therapy.  This seems to be the national expert: www.diastasisrehab.com, and I guess she's coming to Portland in June.

  • I bought one, a belly bandit and it was HORRIBLY uncomfortable and unnecessary!  Seriously DON'T get one.  At St V's you can ask them to order you an abdominal binder. The ones they have are WAY nicer than the belly bandit and included!!  I feel so dumb for wasting my money on that.  I also didn't use the itzbeen or milk band reminder bracelets.  Didn't even consider those.  Pen and paper worked for that if I needed to track anything that closely and the bracelets, I figured if I forgot which boob I last started her on once and a while it wouldn't be the end of the world.

    HTH :)

Can't wait to see pics of your little one, it IS getting closer!!

  • Nope, haven't used any of those things.
  • Thanks for the feedback everyone! I seriously don't know what's common knowledge out there about babies/products as this is the first on both my and DH's side in 22 years! I feel so out of the loop!

Anyways, as far as the itzbeen timer and reminder bracelets, I just keep having nightmares that I forget to change my little girl or feed her and it just makes me nervous. I know it's ridiculous b/c I'm sure she'll let me know!! But I just get so nervous thinking about it...I'm so "scatter-brained"!  I'm not trying to set up a schedule or anything!

    Thanks!

  • Oh she'll let you know! I wouldn't worry too much about it ;). And $65 for a belly binder seems ridiculously expensive to me. I don't even know what it does!
  • I used a Belly Bandit that I borrowed from a friend, and I did notice that it helped support my lower back, which was pretty weak and sore post-baby, and also helped me feel a little less "squishy."  It was nice to have, but definitely not something that I'd consider a must-buy.  Hope that helps!

Don't worry so much!  With diapers, you will be able to tell in various ways if you need to change her.  Some of the diapers have a little yellow stripe that turns blue if it's wet.  Also the diaper just feels differently if it's wet (kind of mushy feeling).  And if baby's hungey, she'll let you know, trust me!

To answer your question, no I didn't use any of those.  I'm the most vain person in the world, so I tried on a belly binder thing at Nordy's, but hated it, just really uncomfortable.  Also I didn't ever feel the need for a bracelet or timer at all.  I would keep a tablet of paper the first few days and write down how many ounces she ate (or how long you fed at each breast), how many wet diapers, etc.  I did that for about the first 10 days, cause my head was so foggy from the c/s meds...
