Can you return formula?

Does anyone know if you can return unopened formula to Walmart or Target? My aunt(bless her heart) has been sending us cans of random formula that she buys. I'm not even kidding, we have like at least one can of each brand. My pedi advised against switching formulas around, so I was wondering if we could return them to Walmart and get a gift card and use it to buy the right kind of formula?

Anyone know?

Re: Can you return formula?

  • At the grocery store here you need a receipt. They told me it is the law...still not sure if it is true.

  • Yes you can, but please tell your aunt to stop buying whatever brand (and tell her what your pedi said).  It's very sweet of her to do, but when you return them, the store will damage them out and throw them away...for liability purposes they can't put them back on the shelf, so it ends up being a total waste.

If you don't feel comfortable saying anything, which I totally understand, maybe your mom or dad can?

thats what walmart and target both told me...

tell her to stop.. its a waste of money.. or tell her to buy the kind you use..

  • I know Walmart won't let you.  My MIL bought DS the wrong kind of formula last year and they told me it was against company policy to take back infant formula.

  • Thanks ladies. I figured they wouldn't. I'm not sure I would be ok buying formula that's been returned. I've asked her and my mom has. Told her what the pedi said and her words were "pshh it won't hurt her, he's not the law" Indifferent

Any ideas on what to do with it?

  • Our Target has let me exchange the formula without any questions or receipt but I can see why that law wold be in place. If you don't want to use the different formulas and can't exchange them, what about donating them to a local WIC office or Food Bank? Then maybe you could tell your Aunt that you've tried those formulas with you LO and LO just won't take that formula only this brand (whatever brand it is that you use). The other brands make LO gassy or lots of spit-up or just won't accept the bottle, etc...and you can use different excuses for different brands so it will seem like you actually tried them. Yes, lies, I know but better that than wasted formula and money.

Try donating to a women's shelter? Or if you don't know of one near you, I bet a local church could point you in the right direction.

  • I don't use formula, so I wouldn't really know. What I have heard though is they cannot take it back w/o a receipt, because otherwise people could use wic to get the formula, and then return it for in store credit to use toward something else. No idea if that's true or not. But if that is the case, they may let you exchange it for the kind you do use, since you're still getting formula either way.

Donate it to a food bank
