baby names - need ideas/opinions

Due to my impatience for waiting to find out the sex, I decided to just come up with a list of names and discuss with DH later.

For girls, I could go on and on, but for boys I get stuck.  Also, I tend to like boy names that are very American and we have a very common Hispanic last name.  So, I'm not sure if they'll match.

What do you think of these names?  Feel free to add any suggestions.

Girl
Elise (I'm pretty much set on this for a girl)
Sofia - for a middle name b/c I know too many Sofia's now ;)
Sabrina
Mia
Claire
Kate
Chloe
Audrey
Abrielle (with the nn Abby)
Leah - DH's cousin is named Leah, so may not be an option

Boy
Jacob (yes I'm a Twifan)
Ethan
Aiden
Julian
Logan
Addison
London

As you can see, the grandparents will have issues pronouncing most of these names.

  • BTW, my dogs' names are Gizmo and Eva and my mom has trouble pronouncing both names.

  • I'm not much help because I have the same problem! Elise, Mia, Sabrina, Abrielle, Jacob, and Aiden are my favorites.
  • So many of your girl names are on my list! I also love Elise. Sabrina is what I am hoping to convince DH to name this little one...so I love that one! And Mia. So sweet. Abrielle is original! The more I say it, the more I like it.

My favorite of your boy names is Ethan.

  • I love all your names! And I wouldn't worry too much about the pronunciation issuues. The people who have to like the names are you and Jose!

I like Elise a lot too and i think it sounds great with your last name. But, I like all of the names on your girl list! On your boy list I love Ethan, Aiden and Julian. And how funny, all of your boy names end with "n" except for Jacob :)

  • I love Sabrina! Chloe and Audrey are really cute. Mia is adorable, but it's gotten reallllllllllllllly popular in Miami. I know at least 5 little girls I can think of off the top of my head who were born in the last 2 years or so and are named Mia.

My favorites from your boy list are the first four. We were seriously considering Aidan (with that spelling versus the -den spelling) for Emma had she been a boy. I love it! But ultimately we decided that if we weren't going to give our kids Hispanic names, we should at least give them non-Hispanic names that were pronounceable in Spanish so that a) our Spanish-speaking relatives could pronounce them and b) it would somewhat flow if you wanted to say their full name in Spanish (since we too have a very common Hispanic last name). I couldn't wrap my tounge around pronouncing Aidan in Spanish in any way that sounds half decent. I think you would have the same issue if you picked Jacob or Ethan, but I think those are both great names too! I like the nickname Jake for Jacob...so adorable :) Julian is an awesome name and can easily be said in English or Spanish.

Addison is a nice name, but unfortunately, even though the name itself has a very masculine sound to it, I now associate it with girls since it's been mainly used as a girl name lately. I think I'd do a double take for a boy named Addison.

  • Oh just wanted to add - there's a boy name that's been seriously growing on DH and I lately (yes, we still talk about names all the time even though we are nowhere near TTC #2): Liam. I don't think we'd ever use it because of the language factor, but I think it's so adorable. Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there because it seems to match with the style of names you like.

    This exactly.

I really like Mia best, but it is very popular.  If that doesn't bother you, then go for it!  : )  And I see Addison as a girl name, sorry.

  • Why does your mom have trouble pronouncing "Eva" that's a Spanish name.

I think you should pick the name you like and not worry about how it sounds with your last name (unless it means something funny). When DH and I choose DS's name we had a similar problem. We were trying to find a name that would be easy to pronounce in Hebrew, English and Spanish and we never found one! at the end we just chose a name we loved, Logan, and it actually means "No kindergarden" in Hebrew LOL but we live in the USA, not Israel.

    Girl
    Sabrina
    Mia
    Chloe
    Audrey
Leah - DH's cousin is named Leah, so may not be an option

    Boy
    Jacob (yes I'm a Twifan)
    Ethan
    Julian
    Logan
Addison (I don't like it because it sounds like such a girl name to me)

Its funny because your Boy's name is almost identical to the one I made when I was pregnant with DS

    Abrielle

    Boy
    Jacob
    Ethan
    Logan

And don't worry about your family not being able to pronounce the baby's  name - Hunter is pretty tough for our parents, but we had them practice for months before he was born and their pronunciation is so much better now, LOL!

  • I love Sabrina for a girl. Would Sofia be the middle name for Elise? I love the name Ethan for a boy but that one would be hard for the grandparents. Picking a name is one of the best parts of having a baby!
  • I think you girls are right about the Spanish last name.  It shouldn't be too bad with an American first name, like Cameron Diaz.

Jen - I also have found that Mia has become very common.  If we use it, it may be for a middle name.  I also like Liam and it was on my longer list.

Steph - Yes, our favorite girl name is Elise Sofia.  That's one that I had in mind before we even started TTC. DH loves it, so that's pretty much it for a girl.  I just found the name Abrielle today online and I love it b/c I love Abby as a nickname, but I don't love the name Abigail.  Maybe if we have 2 girls, I an make another combination of the other names.

Ethan has been my top boy name since I had a crush on Ethan Hawke in the mid-90s, lol.  But, now, I'm on not 100% set on it.  I also have no clue for a middle name that goes with Ethan.

BTW, my mom has trouble pronouncing Eva b/c it's supposed to be the way that Walle says it in the movie when he meets her, ee-v-uh.   But, she refuses to call her that and pronounces it eh-va (with a short e).  I keep telling her to just say it like the Spanish i, but IDK why she doesn't.  So, I can't picture her trying to pronounce Ethan or Aiden.  I guess she'll just have to practice!

  • I forgot to mention that I don't think I'd use Addison anyway.  Even though it was originally a boy's name and now it's considered unisex, but my BIL is an aspiring actor and that's actually part of his stage name.  So, DH won't go for that AT ALL!  I think he didn't like Abrielle b/c BIL's real name is Abel and he said that sounded too close to Abel.  I don't think it does, but we'll see.

I personally LOVE Ethan Alexander.  Not sure your LN, but I think it would go well w/ a common LN (i.e., Ethan Alexander Gonzalez).

I like the sound of that!  That was a really close guess!  DH's last name starts with a G.

  • Love the names Elyse, Sabrina, Jacob, and Julian.  We have the same issue - my ILs have a hard time saying Eli it comes out (Eh-lee) jeje

  • Aiden is our boys name :)

I don't personally like Addison for a boy - I think it's a girls name, and London is NMS either...what about Landon? Jackson?

  • I agree with the others who say to choose the name you like and worry about family later.

Our son's name is Cedric, and DH's last name is a very very common hispanic name.  Guess what?  It works somehow.  I figured the kid would have the last name to show that part of his heritage and wouldn't need to be named Pablo just b/c it matched with his last name.  I also liked the pairing of a different first name with such a common common last name.  With our daughter, though, I figured she might choose to change her last name someday, so we went with the more latin Graciela. I got a bit of flak for Cedric's name from the spanish speaking part of the family ("Sergio? Eric? Federico?"), but they figured it out and calmed down.

You've got some great choices on your lists, and it sounds like you are set on the girl's name already.   Have fun choosing!

    Tania
