It happened...Just like you said it would

Some lady who I have never met before noticed I was pregnant and said "congratulations, how far along are you?"  I said, "only 12 weeks".  Her response, "Oh, is there more than one in there?"  Me, "yes".  Her "AWWW, Are they natural?"  Me, "yes"...end of conversation.  I mean really, I don't even know her and have no interest in telling her my private business.  I am not so much offended but more amused that as much as I read these stories from you ladies, I never thought anyone would ever say something as dumb as "are they natural" to me.  I know what she meant.  But what I would have wanted to say in response to her was EVEN IF I WERE TO SHARE MY PRIVATE BUSINESS WITH YOU STRANGE LADY ABOUT HOW THEY WERE CONCEIVED VIA IVF IT DOESN'T MAKE MY BABIES ANY LESS NATURAL THAN ANYONE ELSE'S BABIES BECAUSE OF THAT.

Ok, now that I have typed that out and noticed my excessive use of all caps maybe I could have been slightly offended.  I'm over it now but thought I would share since you all said it would happen.Wink

Re: It happened...Just like you said it would

  • Yep. :) It happens to me a lot too! I think people feel that it is now "socially acceptable" to ask this.  I am sorry you had to go through that.  It didn't happen to me until I was about 15 weeks, because I found out at 13 weeks that it was twins.  To make matters worse, it was a coworker that I had JUST started working with.  I wanted to respond with just a simple, "How were your children conceived?" but I didn't want to cause any problems at work. I don't know why people think that this is any of their business... (Or why they don't realize that this is not something that is polite to ask).

  • Welcome to the club.  I still get asked that at least twice a week.  Some people are even more bold and say "do they run in the family or did you use fertility drugs?", like those are the ONLY ways to conceive twins.

  • Yep, I get it too.  The very first question after they hear about 3 is "are they natural?"  I kinda want to pull them aside and whisper "Just an FYI, that can be a very personal and offensive question". But I don't.

Sometimes I want to say "Yup, lemme show you the video" ;)

  • That seems to be a common response when people find out your having twins. It doesn't bother me. I just say no and leave them with that look of amazement on their face.

  • All you have to say is, "what's a fake twin?"

  • Depends on the person who asks - I have said - We had a little help to  We didn't realize how much twins ran in our families until we found out we were having them!

Which twins DO run in our families, so oh, well.

  • Oh yeah. Sadly, I'm sure it will only be the first of many.

Wait till they are born and people ask "what kind they are."

    Sigh.

  • Try not to take too much offense to the "are they natural" question -- people really, really don't get that it's rude, and in most cases, they're just being curious (though waaaay too nosy).

I got that question a lot, and yeah, it bugged, but I don't think anyone really meant ill by it.

Now, I always get the "do twins run in your family?" question.  I just say "nope."  (they're IVF twins)

  • I actually get that question more now than when I was pregnant.  I wonder why people are so curious if you needed help or not.

I love that one.  I may have to steal it....

I have also been bluntly asked about 4 or 5 times... "Oh, did you use Clomid or something?" Indifferent I think 90% of the population has no filter.  they just spit out rude comments.    I wonder, why on Earth can't they say, "oh, that's great news"  and keep it at that.

I think it's a) curiousity (they never think about the invasive nature though) b) they want to know if it could happen to them even though everyone is different.

  • Yesterday I had to go to the dentist and they wanted to do x-rays so I told them they couldn't.  I've had a lot of work done so they know me well and I went there a lot when I was pregnant with DD.  Before they even had a chance to ask if the twins were natural I said, "Oh we were very surprised that there were two in there!"  I've noticed if I say that they don't go on to ask anymore.
  • I'm sure you saw  my post yesterday about the L&D nurse :)

    Haha, I'm stealing that. : )

  • Just throwing in my 2 cents:  it really doesn't bother me when people ask.  I am proud of my girls no matter how they came to be and I know people are just curious.  I've never had anyone judge me when I tell them and I think most are suprised with my candid responses.  It is such a unique experience TTC, being pregnant with twins and now raising them...I love to share my story.  I know most of you don"t agree with me but I wanted to represent the other viewpoint.
  • ugh sorry it happened to you. happens to me often as well :-P

"Do twins run in your family?" "Did you have any assistance?"

LIKE ITS ANY OF YOUR FREAKING BUSINESS!!!!!

I share the same viewpoint. Guess I'm in the minority. I could care less if people ask me if they're "natural" or via fertility treatments. I tell them straight up. The other question regarding if twins run in my family it's hardly offensive to me. I answer the questions b/c people are generally just curious. Most people aren't asking to be malicious. I don't know maybe I'll have a different stand the further I get in this pregnancy, but for now I'm proud and happily answer questions about my twins.
