Pronunciation

One name I just love (and have for quite some time) is Philippa, with a NN Pippa. Regardless of your opinion of the name (it's not uncommon in the UK but never jumped the pond), I have a question about pronunciation.

In the UK it's pronounced PHIL-ip-a (like Philip but with an 'a'), but most people who've taken it to the US almost always have it pronounced phil-LIP-pa. I'd plan on calling her Pippa anyways, but if she grows up to prefer Philippa, I want to be sure I love that too.

So the question is- would you try to use the native pronunciation, or would you go with the 'american' pronunciation?

Re: Pronunciation

  • I'd say PHIL-ippa.

Pippa is so cute! The only other time I've heard Pippa was from the tv movie Storm of the Century.

  • I've always said it (in my head, I've never met a Philippa! but I've read several of Philippa Gregory's books) PHIL-ip-a, the UK way.

I like it by the way and the nickname Pippa - cute!

  • Both pronounciations (PHIL-ip-a and phil-LIP-a) basically sound like the same thing to me..

  • I know a Philipa who pronounces it Phil LEAP a, so that is what I always see and say.

  • I'd say PHIL-ip-a. Who are these people pronouncing it like phi-LIP-a? That sounds ridiculous, IMO.

    Pippa is very cute.

  • Wow! I'm shocked to get some decently positive responses! :) Usually when I say Philippa or Pippa someone makes a nasty face at me lol...

She hasn't jumped the pond yet (never cracked the top 1000)... and I hope she doesn't! :P

  • The UK way :). Such a cute name/nn.

This is how I would pronounce it originally.  But no one knows how to say my name and I always correct them.  It's annoying, but they eventually get it.  If you want the UK version just stick with that and everyone else will fall in line!

Same - when I say them out loud they don't seem different to me.

  • Pippa is such a cute nn!
  • I think the popularity of Philippa Gregory books are going to help out your pronunciation issues. It's like the girl version of Philip. Not so hard.

    I think it's adorable, btw.

I agree with this. I love Pippa

  • I would also say Phil-LEAP-a.
