1st Birthday Parties Poll

How did you decide on where to have your lo's party?

How many did you invite?

What time of day was the party? How long did it last?

Anything you wish you would've done differently?

I'm thinking about having Abby's party at our home. Since it's so warm in July, I'm thinking of having a brunch. Abby is at her best in the morning, but I'm not sure how hard it will be on guests coming from other cities (hour drive). Just looking for ideas on what others have done. TIA!

Re: 1st Birthday Parties Poll

  • Ours was at our house.  We grilled burgers, hot dogs and watched football.

We had about 50  people, including about 20 kids. I rented a moonbounce and did bubbles in the back yard.

the party was around 2 in the afternoon - after naptime - it lasted a few hours but it was more of a "BBQ - Get Together" rather than "1st Birthday"

It was a perfect party but I wish I would have not let my mom take pictures.  I have about 75 pictures of a room full of people not looking at the camera...so annoying.

  • Sarah,

Would you have hired a photographer or just gotten someone else to take the pics? (My mom is a crappy picture taker as well!) :o)

  • Obviously I haven't done this yet because we have a July (28th) baby as well.  Since it's the dead heat of the summer DH and I thought it'd be cool to have a pool party at our home.  We're going to get a couple of the little baby/kiddie pools and then grill hot dogs and hamburgers.  I thought it was a cool idea because my friends kids' all all around the same age as DS (give or take 6 months).

Not sure about the guest list because we have a large family.  But there will probably be about 6 kids around DS's age that will probably play in the pool.  Coincidently all boys.

I would have just had other people take pictures... my mom just sucks with a camera.

I looked into hiring someone and I just couldn't afford it - but it would have been great

  • I am beginning to plan Aidan's 1st birthday.  We are going to have it at our house and probably around lunch.  We are going to grill out and have cake and ice cream.  It will mostly be family and our closest friends.  There will be 2-3 other kids around Aidan's age.
  • Thanks, Sarah. I'm going to try to save my money and not hire someone. Maybe I can get with my sister and enlist her help. :o)

Good idea, MrsAO. I'm trying to avoid the big pool as much as possible. Just because we will have a large age range of kid's there, and I think I would be stressed out trying to make sure no one was drowning. I could do a sprinkler(s) though.

  • How did you decide on where to have your lo's party? We chose our church fellowship hall because 1. it is new, 2. it is free, 3. it is cold in January!

How many did you invite? About 70 people (only family!!! yes...we both have big families) but about 50 came.  We had spinich dip, chips & dip, hot dogs, and cake & ice cream.  We also had bins of bottled water, juice boxes, and sweet tea set out.

What time of day was the party? How long did it last?  Our party was from 12-2 (between naps.)

Anything you wish you would've done differently?  No...it was great!

  • We had it at our house and did it in the afternoon after nap. We invited mostly family and a few friends. We rented a bounce house because the majority of the kids were older, there was one or two kids Lyla's age. We got pizzas from Costco and Matt's mom made a cake.

I would guess there were about 30-40 people there. It lasted about 2 hours, I guess.

I don't really think I would change anything. We kept it pretty simple. I felt like people were getting bored but not sure what I could do to change that.

  • Obviously we still have a little while but I am starting to at least brainstorm.

Since it's in the middle of football season when she turns one, we are going to either grill out, or have pizza and of course a cake, and of course football will be on...we'll probably do it around lunch.  I'll invite family and some close friends, and we'll have a few kid related activities in the back yard since I'll have an age range from 1-5.

What a great idea. We both have pretty large families and our house isn't big enough. And I really don't want to use either grand-parents house. I have along way to go though. :D

  • I really, really wanted to have J's first party here at our house.   However, it's just not working out with us living away from both families, and our homes being 4 hours apart.  So, Jaxon will have 3 parties this year...a small party at our house on his actual birthday, and a party at each grandparent's house on the following weekends.  While I have everyone together these times, I'm claiming a weekend for next year, and they will know well enough in advance to not make plans!!
  • I am doing a brunch at 10 AM. It will be at our fountain...since LO and his buddies aren't swimming yet, I figured they could just splash around :)

  • Re: the pool. My friend hired a lifeguard from UA aquatics for one of her kid's parties. I don't think he charged very much.

  • Loving all of these ideas...thanks!

    Bethany,

Glad I'm not the only one doing a brunch. I may get back with you about food. :o)

I really thought it was the best idea. Kid usually naps around 2 or 3, and I didn't want him to be tired or cranky at his own party. I have tons of ideas about food, because I LOVE brunch! We can share ideas soon :)

  • We had Zander's party at home (very useful since there's easy access to a bath right after cake time!). We had about 40 people, all family, and we served light refreshments and cake. Definately plan around nap time. We also have to take football season into account, planning around major games and/or kickoff times. :-)
  • Caleb's was at The Little Gym.  We had just joined and after our very first class we both loved it so much that I knew immeditely that it would be perfect for his party.

Don't remember how many I invited, but I would say there were probably about 15ish little ones there.

His party was from 1:30 - 3:00.  I worked around his nap times and that was the best time of day for him at the time.

The only thing I wish I had done differently was not open gifts at the party.  He could have cared less so I basically sat there by myself opening everything whis was awkward, plus it took play time away from the kids.

  • Rachel... I think a brunch is a great idea!

How did you decide on where to have your lo's party? We decided to have it in my hometown on Easter weekend. That way most of our family and close friends would be in town. We could have had it in the town where we live, but then everyone would have had to stay in a hotel, and we didn't want that. DH's family still had to travel, but no one had to get a hotel.

How many did you invite? About 35. We had about 30 there, including 5 kids.

What time of day was the party? How long did it last? 2-4 p.m.

Anything you wish you would've done differently? I wish I could have let DD sleep longer before the party!

  • How did you decide on where to have your lo's party? We also had to do the 3 parties for her 1st bday. Our families are both over 3 hours away and live in the opposite directions from one another. We wanted our families to be able to be a part of the celebration (especially our grandparents who aren't able to travel anymore). I am so glad that we chose to do it this way, b/c DH's grandmother's health ended up rapidly declining shortly after this and she passed away a couple of months later.

How many did you invite? mainly family and close friends to the hometown parties and just our friends to the one at our home (which ended up being about 20 adults and 10-12 kids).

What time of day was the party? How long did it last? afternoon (2-4 I think)

Anything you wish you would've done differently? I would have either planned to do some of the running around for the party earlier or have alloted close friends to help me. We had way to much to do and some mishaps along the way and I was still trying to frantically set up as people were arriving.

  • I originally wanted it at the park but since it was raining like everyday, we had it at DH's parent's house.  They have a huge finished in basement and a nice small yard so it was perfect.  This year we're having it at our house b/c hopefully our yard will be ready and kid friendly

I don't remember how many we invited but we had around 30 there.

I think it was at 2 and lasted about 2 hours.

I would have done more things in advance.  I wouldn't have waited until the week of the party to make all the decorations.  I would have started baking her cake sooner.  I waited until later in the day and we lost power which really made things hectic.
