Potty training ?

Lynda was loving the potty seat - wanted to sit on it all the time, read stories up there, couldn't get enough of the thing.   Recently she has major potty seat phobia.  She wants nothing to do with it.  I figured, no big deal, she must not be ready.

Well, our old routine was to sit on the potty while I fill the bath tub and when she was finished, I'll put her in the bath.  Now, she gets excited to get into the bath, and as soon as she's in there (without having used the potty) she'll stand up, pee, and then sit down when she's done.  She's understanding that it's time to go - just in the wrong place.

Any suggestions on how to move the peeing to the potty?  or is it more she'll do it when she's ready?

  • I would say she's not ready but she is figuring it all out.  I would try to get her to go in her diaper before she gets in if she doesn't want the potty.  Ask her if she needs to go potty and that she can't pee in the tub.  Worth a try I guess.  I know how frustrating it can be!

  • I agree with Dawn, that she's probably a little young to be fully ready,  but she's on an excellent track to be potty trained on the earlier side. Zoe also started using the potty around 15-18 months, i can't remember, but then she regressed and wanted nothing to do with it for a while. All of the sudden when she turned 2 she told me she wanted underwear and no pee pee in the underwear, so i went with it and we're doing fullblown training now. I'd say, don't push her just yet, but you can't continue to ask her if she'd like to go on the potty, esp at the before bathtime as routine!
  • IDK if this helps, but maybe as soon as she stands up you can ask her to go in the potty and tell her that you don't pee in the tub.  She may not go, but it will reinforce where she's supposed to pee.

This is us totally! Quinn LOVES sitting on his little potty or using the potty seat. He will sit and sit and sit especially when I'm filling up the tub. He has never peed in the potty though. We talk about it. He says pee pee goes in the potty, but just never does it. I don't push and I let him tell me when he's ready to get into the bath. But, it never fails, he gets into the tub and within 2 minutes, he pees. Then he looks at me and says "Mommy, I did pee pee." Yes, thanks Quinn lol. I tell him that pee pee goes in the potty and not the bathtub but that's as far as it gets.
I guess when they are really ready, they will let us know.

  • Sophie used to do the same thing. Honestly, Lynda is young - and she seems independent. I would wait for her to want to sit on the potty to pee pee on her own. She may just be having fun peeing in the tub and there is nothing wrong with that. I don't think you should or really need to redirect her at this time.

  • Mikey used to do the same thing too. As soon as the water would be ready and I'd move him to the tub he'd pee, and that's after sitting on the potty for a good 10 minutes. Just now he's started really wanting to use the potty and he's actually going. I would just keep doing what you are doing and don't stress about her peeing in the bath. Eventually she'll want to go in the toilet. Oh and when she does go potty in the toilet make sure you make a BIG deal of it. They like the excitement of doing something right.
  • Thanks for the feedback!  I'm in no rush to get to have her trained - I figured I would work on it over the summer when I'm home with her if she's ready.

  • I have absolutely no suggestions, as I have no exprience.  But there seems to be a common factor amoungst the little ones... perhaps it when the baby touches the water that urges them to go potty.  So, maybe have them play w/ the water first (w/ their hands) before entering the tub, and wait until they go potty?  Just a suggestion... not sure how realistic it is.  : )
