Newly Pregnant, does this affect my workouts?

I am very newly pregnant, only about 4 weeks along. I had a miscarriage in Dec and am a little nervous about it happening again so Im trying to take all precautions.

I workout 3-5 times a week, and am wondering if I need to tone it back now that I am pregnant? Does my heart rate need to stay below a certain point or if i was doing it before becoming pregnant will i be okay?

Any advice would be great!

  • You should keep your heartrate at a certain level (maybe below 160?) and also be aware of overheating and keeping hydrated.

I'm a big believer in listening to your body and what it's comfortable with.

Having said that, however, due to your history I would run any exercise programme past my Dr and get their advice.

    Good luck.

  • Congrats! I have read that you are supposed to keep your heartrate at or below 140 at least in the first tri. Its a little difficult and feels like you are doing as much, so I have been jogging and just including more walking breaks. I dont have a heartrate monitor, I only use the ones on the treadmill which can be off but it is a decent gage. Also just listen to your body, if something does not feel right then stop.

I remember feeling pretty good weeks 4/5 but by 6 I really started to feel sick and just tired. So do what you can when you can and days that your body just isnt up for it, let it rest. Good luck.

  • I forgot to mention, they say as long as you were doing it before you got pg then you can continue. Be careful trying a completely new and difficult routine. As long as you keep that and the other precautions in mind you should be fine.

  • That 140 HR business is old advice that is no longer routinely given, though a lot of drs have not updated!

Mine were all incredibly supportive of my continuing running, their only caution was to be careful of falling during the winter.  I played basketball until 10 weeks.  I also irish dance (badly) - and my teacher is an OB resident who wants me to keep dancing as long as I feel comfortable.

I am still running but it's much slower and I take a lot more breaks (I'm pushing 23 wks now).

  • Given your history, I would check with you OB. You probably know that already.

At 4 weeks, I didn't even know LO existed.  I was still running 40 miles week, and marathon training.  We actually found out about LO  at around 7 weeks, a couple days after I'd done a 20 mile run.

I've been able to workout consistently through out this pregnancy. Now, it's about 5 - 6 times a week. I don't use heart rate, I use the breath test instead. Basically, as long as I can comfortably  keep a conversation  as I workout, I'm not exerting too much energy.

    GL!
