sex offender registry

https://www.familywatchdog.us/Search.asp

I know you can check the sex offenders in your neighborhood by going to the miami-dade gov website, but this website actually posts their pictures and WHY they were convicted and at what age they were convicted.  I looked up my address and my mom's (since Abby's there a lot) and there are sex offenders within a few blocks of both of our houses.  Not only that, but they were convicted of sexual battery and lewd and lascivious acts on children under the age of 12.  12!!!  And one them??  yeah, he lives like less than 1000 ft from the elementary school in our neighborhood.

i looked up my SIL's address and some guy lives less than 10 blocks away from her; at my MIL's, some guy lives a few blocks away, too.. right behind Winston Park Elementary!

  • I will say that I like the fact that this one also has the date of the offense committed and why.  I unfortunately have a student that is homeless because his father committed some kind of offense in his teens that is still on his record and is not technically allowed to live anywhere in the area.  I'm not saying what he did is right - but he did it 30+ years ago and is homeless with a wife and three kids.  There are sex offenders everywhere and I'd much rather be living by ones that committed the act years ago and may have received help and treatment than a recent offender.

yeah, i saw someone that had commited an act in the 80s, he was 18 and the person was under 16.  not that it makes it right, but maybe he was dating a 16 year old or something?

Yeah - I've actually done a lot of research into it.  In that case he could have been just 18 dating an almost 16 year old (which let's face it happens all the time in high school).  I'm not saying what they did is right but no 18 year old boy is always thinking right.  Especially if they are not a repeat offender and it happened years and years ago I don't find it as troubling.

My heart really aches for this kid of mine - his family can't catch a break and I think that some of the rules are almost a little too strict.  I mean someone could commit manslaughter and have actually killed someone and get off with less of a punishment for some of these people that did one bad thing.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying that I don't care about sex offenders.  I think it's terrible and deserves to be punished - but sometimes that punishment doesn't always fit the crime - especially in cases where it happened 30+ years ago and the person has rehabbed and got their life in order.

This.  That's why I never look at those sites b/c you really never know what the actual crime is and the rules for needing to be listed on the registry and to broad.  I know when I was 16, my boyfriend was 18, if my parents had been different people they could have pressed charges and had him charged with statutory rape and he would have needed to list himself on the registry for something was consensual.

I wish they would really separate that registry differently, have a section for violent sex offenders, crimes against minor children, repeat offenders, prostitution, etc.

I will say that I have not looked at the link you posted for the reasons I listed so it may have those kinds of details on there, I'm just going by what I've seen in the past.

  • What those sites do not say is usually L&L acts are done on a family member by a family member (ie - grandfather, uncle, father, close family friend) and not by strangers.  Usually it's a bad touch or some form of  exhibition.  The problem is also that another family member often knows about it or saw it or suspects it (such as a mother) and does nothing about it.  It takes a lot of guts to say something, because inevitably the charges split the family up and create nastiness for years to come.  I applaud the children who have the guts to tell a teacher, a social worker, a counselor or a sexual assault team member or even their mother and say so and so did a bad thing and I want them to understand the consequences of what they did to me.  They touched me in a bad way.  It is hardest on the children, but do not fool yourself into thinking that these things are done by strangers.

Leanna, it does have those details, for the most part.  The guy that lives in my neighborhood commited the act on a child under 12 years old 7 years ago when he was 64.  THAT is something I need to know about.  The guy by my  mom's?  He commited the act in 1994 when he was 19 and it was "sexual battery" on someone under 16.  It also classifies each offender as an assault against children, rape, sexual battery or other.

I get yours and Rach's point of view- I agree with it (when I was 17, my boyfriend was 19; when I was 16, my boyfriend was 18... I liked the older guys lol)  But if there's a dirty old man who molested a child and is now living a mere 500 ft from the elementary school I was going to send my daughter to (just 10 blocks away,) then, yeah, I want to know who he is, what he did, when he did it, where he lives and what he looks like.

agreed, but it doesn't mean that those people who acted on their family members never assaulted a child they didn't know, or who weren't familiy members.  you can never be too careful!

  • Thanks for the website. I think it is important to know who is living in your neighborhood for the safety of the kids.  But, you also have to be aware of what is going on with your child's friends/family members.  Now,I  understand why my mom never let me sleep over at a friend's house.  You just never know.

On another note, unfortunately now, even minors can be arrested and placed on the sexual offenders list for "sexting" which is really sad b/c they are probably just stupidly sending nude pics of themselves or classmates and then they'll end up with this label for the rest of their lives because it's considered child pornography.

  • I also wanted to add that MDCPS schools are required to send home updated lists with pictures and details.  I always hated doing this because not matter how I packaged the letter, kids would always open it and start asking me questions about it which made me uncomfortable.  I think that's information for parents and it should be up to them to discuss with their kids if they choose to.

  • I've come across this site before and found that an ex-boyfriend's DAD was registered for sexual battery on a minor under 12. The conviction was only three years old at the time. When we were dating, I had no idea. I would hang out at his house all the time, never the wiser that the man in the next room was a registered sex offender. My mom almost had a heart attack when she found out, and It totally freaked me out so now I check it all the time. You just never know - it's important to be informed.
