Re: Not Supposed to Let Baby Nap Longer Than...

  • My LO is younger than yours, but I don't let her sleep more than 3 hours at a time during the day.

  • Never heard that...I let my babies sleep as long as they need to.  If they are sleeping it's because they need it. My lil' guy sleeps 12 hrs at night then takes a morning nap for about 2 to 3 hours and an afternoon nap for about 3 to 4 hours.  He's just over 3 months old and he still sleeps like a newborn.  I mentioned it to the Dr and she was not concerned.  The only reason why I even mentioned it is because I am not used to babies sleeping that much at this age...my older two certainly didn't.

  • If they are under 12lbs, then they souldnt go longer than 5 hours without eating to prevent dehydration, so from what I understand they shouldnt sleep longer than 5 hours.

    this

  • don't wake him/her unless it's been a long nap and it's getting close to the evening hours.  Even then I'd only change the diaper and if she wants to keep sleeping let her.

never a good idea to wake  a little baby before they are ready to be awake.

  • I was never told anything like this, but DS doesn;t sleep longer than 3 hours without waking up on his own...

I find this hard to believe. DD has been STTN since her first week (when she slept on us, about 6 hours). She's just now made it to about12 lbs and had been STTN (about 9 hours) in her bassinet for the the past 2 months.  She's in the 75th%ile for weight.

Was told to wake to feed every 3 hours during the day and 4 hours at night. At two weeks with consistent gains we were told we can go 4 hours during the day and 5 hours at night.

Can't think of a reason to wake them other than to feed.

  • At the 2 week appt, DS had gained 1lb since being released (7lb 10 oz when released, 8lb 11oz at 2 wk dr appt) so the doctor said we could let him sleep as long as he wanted - we don't need to wake him for feedings anymore. That is what we have been doing.
