3rd Trimester

I try not to vent much, but here I go...

so about 2 weeks ago i had my 1hr glucose test...  was told not to eat, so about 45 minutes later I threw up the gross orange drink.  As a result, I was told that I would need to retake the test the following week (last week) and to eat something 30 minutes prior to drinking the glucose..  well last week (mind you time #2)  i ate before taking the test and was told that my results would be elevated just because I ate, but that hopefully everything would be ok..  Well the results needed to be right at 140 and guess what, they were at 140..  So I was scheduled to take the 3hr test today.  Again I was told not to eat.  Went in today and had the drink and low and behold, 45 minutes later I threw it up again.  So I have taken this F***ing test 3 times now and have been unable to get a result.  With that being said, I have to schedule test #4 next week :(

  • Oh no, I'm so sorry.  The 3 hour test sucks and to have to do it again would bring me to tears.

GL - I had a hard time keeping that nasty stuff down too.

  • Ugh that stinks, I'm so sorry. The 3 hr test is brutal. Hopefully you'll get through your 4th one and be done.

  • That sucks.  In your situation, I would refuse the test.  You didn't even technically fail, and most people that fail the first test pass the 3 hour.  They knew your numbers would be elevated.  I'm irritated for you.
  • I think you have every reason to vent!!! I'm sorry you have to do this!! :(
  • I would be frustrated enough to rethink taking the test...
  • Oy, you poor thing. Why on earth did they have you fast for the first 1-hour? I didn't have to do that.

  • that really sucks. i'm so sorry you have to do it again!  that is so not fair.   and i do NOT get this fasting/no fasting thing.  my doc never said anything and i ate breakfast and had coffee before going in and mine was fine, nobody even asked if I'd had anything yet.  then i see people on here saying they were told only to drink water.

  • I think some ladies posted here before about substituting the drink for jelly beans. Not sure if it was for the 3 hr test though.

  • I don't know why your OBGYN would tell you NOT to eat seeing as that much glucose would make anyone throw up on an empty stomach. My OBGYN said you are actually supposed to eat something like dry toast and an egg before taking the 1 hour test.

I had the same problem (it making me throw up after 45 minutes) and found that 1 piece of dry wheat toast and a scrambled egg along with a bottle of water got me through the test the 2nd time, they drew my blood, and I made it home before I threw up. My numbers were normal and I had no problems with my readings.

Hopefully you will make it through the next test without a problem. =)

  • It is just soooo frustrating, because I know that i'm gonna get sick everytime I take it and its like torture just sitting there knowing that its just a matter of time before I get sick...  Plus my hubby basically took a day off from work today to go with me for no reason.  4 TIMES!!  REALLY????

Have you talked to your OB about it to see if there's some alternative? Seems silly to keep doing this if you're just going to continue barfing the drink up.

i tried that..  the thing is that for the 3hr test it was at a lab not my docs office.  so i called and told the receptionist that i needed to speak to my doc and she said that i just needed to reschedule the test without allowing me to to speak to a nurse or doc..  I called twice and its like she was refusing to let me speak to a doctor :(  i finally just gave up from being so worn out i guess

  • Did they let you have water during the 3 hour test? I just did mine today and I swear that's the only thing that kept me from getting sick.

  • they didn't tell me not to eat before I took mine and without thinking about it I not only ate, but I had two GIGANTIC cookies, and part of a strawberry banana smoothie... I was worried about it but I came in with in normal range (127)
  • I know it's common practice to instruct not to eat, but for both my pregnancies, I was specifically told to not fast.

for my first preg, I was given a list of breakfasts to choose from

for this preg, my doc (I have a different doc now) just told me I didn't have to to fast
