Babies: 0 - 3 Months

newborn clothes question

Hey ladies! Everyone keeps telling me that I am gonna have a small baby since I'm am small framed and have only gained 15lbs so far. I know that they are just guessing and theres really no telling how big my little girl will be till shes born. My doctor will not be doing another u/s unless we have some sort of complications. Heres my question I have not bought any newborn sized clothes. I did get 1 pack of onsies at a baby shower my co-workers had for me and I have another baby shower this weekend. I have a lot of 0-3 sizes that were given to me by a close friend. Do you think I will need many newborn sizes or will the 0-3 fit ok? I dont want to waste money on stuff that wont be worn. I guess I should probably take atleast one cute thing in each size to the hospital for her pics wouldnt you think?

Re: newborn clothes question

  • Every baby is different - but LO was born at 20 inches, & 8 lbs 6 oz. We only had 0-3 clothing & had to go by some newborn outfits to get him thru the first couple of weeks since 0-3 swam on him.

  • My baby girl was 5lb5oz when she was born and she's just now growing into her 0-3 stuff.  She's been in NB until now and it was big when we started!  She's about 9lbs now.  So....depending on how small your DD will be, having NB stuff may come in handy.  Good luck!
  • My drs estimate was upper 7's, 8lbs at the most.  DD was 9lbs 4.42 oz, you never know :)  I was pretty much all baby as well.  You LO can wear clothes slightly too big, too small doesn't really work.
  • MY LO was 5lbs 15oz when he was born and NB was still a little big on him.  The 0-3, well let's just say he swam in them, lol.  All clothes sizes are cut different so it will really depend on your LO.  Gerber clothes shrink if you have any of those.  GL

  • My son was 7 lbs. 10 oz. and I found myself needing some newborn stuff. Not too much, just a few outfits you can rotate. My first son was 8 lbs. 11 oz and I found that 1 pound really makes a difference, the 0-3 stuff was a bit big on DS2. Just this past week we are finding that the newborn stuff is not fitting him well anymore. He is 5 weeks old.
  • We all thought our LO would be tiny...predicted weight was at 7 lbs. She ended up being 8 lbs 4 oz and is already 8 lbs 10.5 oz! That being said she is still wearing NB clothes and will for at least another week or maybe two.  Had to send DH out to get some more from what we had before she was born.

DD was 5lb 15 at birth and was in NB for 6 weeks.  There's no way she could have worn 0-3 months for at least the first month.

  • I only gained 17lbs total and my LO was 7lbs 15 oz! He is 4 just about 4 weeks old and is wearing some NB, some 0-3, depending on the brand. I would get some NB clothes if I were you, we didn't have enough and had to go shopping right away! I'd say get several things, take tags off/wash just a few, that way you can either wash more when you get home or return!
  • DD was 7lbs even and wore preemie clothes for 3 weeks. She will be 2 months tomorrow and is stll in NB clothes.
  • Like you said, it depends how big the baby is at birth, and haw quickly they grow. My DD is a little peanut. 7lbs at birth, 2 month appt yesterday was 9 lbs 15 oz. She will be 11 weeks on Friday and can still wear NB onsies/pants. Just not sleepers because she is too long for them.

  • Most babies end up needing NB sizes for a few weeks at least.  My LO is still in NB.  He can wear some 0-3, but I'm trying to get the most use out of his NB wardrobe as possible :)
  • I had 1 newborn sleeper and tons of 0-3. We had to go shopping!

DS was 7-10 and lost weight, so he's still wearing newborn. I've been putting him in 0-3 too, but a lot is way big still

  • DS was estimated to be almost 8lbs but was 6lb 15oz at birth...he is just now between newborn and 0-3...it also depends on the brand...Gerber's clothes run really small...he's already in 3-6 onesies...Carter's 0-3 is the correct length but they are really wide and non of the shorts and pants will stay up on his narrow hips.
  • DS is about 11lbs now and is just now outgrowing his newborn stuff. I would recommend you get at least a few things!!

  • My little lady was born 5 lb 5 oz and 19 inches. She wore preemie clothes for the first three weeks, and she's just now starting to fit into her newborn clothes. We had no NB clothes when she was born and had to go out and stock up! She's going to be in NB clothes for a while, I think.

  • My little man was 7lb 8 oz at birth, growing fast, and he's still in newborn clothes!  A few brands of 0-3 started to fit at about 5 weeks.  You're definitely going to want some more NB stuff.

My suggestion?  Go buy a few packs of plain newborn onesies.  They're easy to change LO in and still cheap--plus, babies in white are the cutest things ever!

  • My doctor's estimate was a 8lber but my little one was only 6.5lbs and I gained 30 pounds !
  • DD1 was 7 lbs. 10 oz. and 21 inches -- she was only in NB stuff for a couple of weeks. She was 50th percentile for weight.

DD2 was in NB stuff (Gerber, mostly) for four weeks and is now mostly in 0-3 month stuff. She was 7 lbs. 6 oz. and 18 inches long.

  • DS was born 7lbs 3oz, 20.5 inches.  As I remember, I had some NB clothes but mostly 0-3 months.  He could fit in NB clothes for about 6 weeks.

  • DS was 7lbs 2 oz, 19 inches and he wore NB clothes for the first month... the 0-3 outfits were HUGE on him!!  I hadn't bought any NB clothes and after he was here and we saw how big the 0-3 clothes were we had to send my mom out to get him some clothes to wear haha

  • We are past 7 weeks old here and still in NB so 0-3 wouldn't have worked here.
  • I only gained 15 pounds. LO was 7 pounds 11 ounces, but she's already 10 pounds at 3 weeks. We just moved up to 0-3 clothes yesterday. They are a bit big, but the NB are too tight.
  • At your next appointment, ask your doctor to estimate the baby's size by feeling your belly. I go to a practice with several doctors and 3 of them guessed within half a pound. LO was 7 lbs. 12 oz. and he is still swimming in most of the newborn clothes, so if your doctor's think baby is going to be on the small size you should probably get a pack of newborn onesies.
