I've read through some of the back posts, and notice that a lot of people ask about the best time to test. I'm trying to guess at my O date because I haven't been charting (wasn't TTC). Based on various calculators, O probably occurred between the 4/9-4/14.
My last visit from AF was 3/31. I could be up to 13DPO now. How trustworthy is the 14 days past menstruation ovulation date theory?
Re: Ovulation Predictor Accuracy?
It's not accurate at all. I had 28 day cycles to a T. I was ovulating on day 20 and then getting AF on day 28. That's why you are best off charting.
You could use an ovulation predictor kit (pee sticks) to confirm you are leading up to ovulation but there is no way to assure you ovulated unless you are charting.

I'm confused...are you asking about a HPT or an OPK?
Only by charting could you really tell when you ovulate. Sure, many people ovulate around then. But MANY people don't.
Day 14 is completely inaccurate! It all depends on your cycle legnth and you can always ovulate late. The only way to get a good idea of when you actually ovulate is charting. Ovulation predictor kits can narrow it down as well.
I'm actually not asking about either (I think), but you answered my question. The ovulation predictors a just guesses. I'm trying to decide if it's too early to test, but since I don't know my O date, it's going to be a little hard to decide when. I could always POAS for the next couple of weeks.
I can't reverse chart to figure it out, boo.
if you don't know your cycle length because it's irregular (like mine was) and/or you don't know when you ovulate within that cycle, I recommend buying a big box of the OPKs, a month's supply. Get your period. When it's over, start testing every day. Some people wait a week, but if you follow the directions on the box, it says start testing after your period. Then you'll also get practice POAS.
Mine varied from cycle to cycle. And yeah the OPKs work, as far as I can tell, what with being KU now. We tried several months with just a basic chart but no testing, and no luck. Three months with the OPK's and then the BFP. And they helped know when we had to hit the sheets and when it was ok to be too tired and wait a day.
Good luck!
I'm also confused. Are you asking when you should test with an HPT?
If that is the case, the forget the ovulation calculators. Figure out when your period should be due (and if you have irregular periods then take the longest cycle you've had in the last 6 months or so) and then test when you should be late. If it's negative, then keep testing until you get a + or your period. If neither happens within 60 days of your lmp, then call your doc. Good Luck.
OPKs and the 14 day "rule"
are guidelines at best.
For some women OPKs will perfectly predict when you will ovulate. For many, many, many they suck!
I think the link someone gave above goes over the many reasons they can be misleading, but I guess I'm a good example - I O'ed 5 days AFTER I got a + OPK test... no where CLOSE to the 24-48 hour window predicted.
