Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swaddle? Sleep sack? Other?

We've been using the Miracle Blanket for the past couple of months and generally it has worked great. However, now DD is strong enough that she can bust through the swaddle a couple times each night, so I think we may be ready to try something new.

What do you guys use? I'm considering the Halo sleep sack. I just hope that she's at the point where having her arms loose won't wake her up...

Re: Swaddle? Sleep sack? Other?

  • After 3 months, there is no need to swaddle any longer because the startle reflux which causes them to wake up is no longer there.

I use sleep sacks when it is cold enough for one, if it is warm he goes without anything.

DS is busting out of his (we just use blankets) and he does wake up more when he gets his arms out, but I don't want to buy something else at this point when he should be able to do without it soon-ish.

Last night I found that he would wake up when he broke out of the swaddle, but if I restarted the white noise machine he'd go back to sleep until he got hungry.

Good to know! It's a PITA trying to re-swaddle her, so I'm glad it may not be needed at this point.

  • As of last night, he's just in his pjs. I totally intended to use a sleep sack, but he seemed to be happy to have his legs free to move about, so I think we'll stick with just pjs (and a crocheted blanket)

  • We've used sleep sacks since DS was two weeks old. We love them! They are kinda expensive so we bought ours from the consigment shop for much less.
  • DD still has the startle reflex so we have to use something.  We love The Woombie.  So much so that I am going to do a review on my blog this Wed and give one away.  It keeps their arms contained but still able to move.  She loves it!!

There can definitely still be a need to swaddle.

We still have to (obviously if we never had, we wouldn't, but now it will be extremely hard to wean him).

We use a Woombie and love it. He wakes up again and again without it. Ugh. Dreading the day he outgrows the thing. I even use it for naps. Such a crutch.

  • Woombie here also. My guy scratches his face and moves his arms around nonstop with nothing but pjs.

The startle reflex can actually remain for up to 5 months.  That being said, when we decided to deswaddle (at 4 months) we went with a sleep sack.

  • We're at the tail end of weaning the Miracle Blanket. First we swaddled with one arm out, then both arms out. We then moved to a sleep sack, but thanks to the 4 month wakeful that hit full force this week, we're back to swaddling his body only with the MB.

His sleep has improved immensely since we started the process. We took it slowly--did the one armed swaddle for about 2 weeks before moving to both arms out. The startle reflex is long gone, and now that he's able to get to his hands to suck, he can soothe himself back to sleep.

  • We are getting rid of the swaddle tonight and going with a sleep sack.

  • We swaddle with the Halo sleepsack swaddles, and it amazes me how tight I can get him wrapped up.  If you think she still needs to be swaddled, I'd recommend the Halo brand.  But the package says to stop swaddling when LO shows signs of breaking loose, rolling over, or not wanting it.  If that's the case, then switching to a Halo sleepsack is the best idea.  I don't know when the startle reflex goes away, but usually at about 3-4 months babies get the the point where they don't need to be swaddled anymore.

  • We use the sleep sack and love them. He moves a lot throughout the night so this way I know he is always covered and warm enough.
