Nebraska Babies

Daycare

So a relative of DH is going to babysit for us when I go back to work.  She is already a SAHM and told me to pay her whatever I can afford.  She would have our newborn 6:45am-3:30pm M-F during the school year.  I've seen most at-home daycares around here are about $100/week.  How much should I pay her?

Re: Daycare

  • I have always paid $125-135 for an infant at the in-home daycares I have taken my kids too. $100 week sounds good to me :).

     ETA-

I know actual daycare centers in town are way more tho-from $165 to over $200! I think a friend of mine pays $250 a week for her infant!! Indifferent

  • Well I guess my point is the only reason I'm taking my child to DH relative in the first place is so that it IS cheaper.  I'm saying I've found $100 in-home a couple places so what should I pay her?

  • Who is this relative? If its like aunt or cousin, I would say around 100$.. maybe 90$. (any distant relative)

Closer relative.. depending on how close your family is, you might get away with even lower. But if you are not close, to not cause any family drama.. I would stay near what others are paying.

  • It is my husband's uncle's wife (his aunt).   huh.   I guess I was thinking since it was a family member I would pay them less.  Because if I wanted to pay full price I could go elsewhere.  We'll see.

You could usually pay far less or a little less... but I wouldn't suggest it for family members that are not close. Because, unlike strangers.. more emotional problems can arise and I only suggest keeping around the same price for the sake of keeping family drama to the minimum. (plus, their are benefits for having family members looking after kids.. like no overcharge for being late and you can trust them more.)

But it all depends on how you relate with your family. Some families can pay nothing and be fine with looking after kids.. while for other families to keep things civil .. you might want to keep around the same range as other people.

  • I think offering $100-120 is fair...we pay $135 for at home not related to us but for the care we get its a great deal, Much less $$ than a center and lots of one on one attention and learning time.
