Q for those who weaned from BF

What kind of symptoms did you have? Did you just stop cold turkey?  How long were you engorged? How much later did you get AF?

Over the last month my supply has dwindled. I have only been nursing/pumping twice a day. Now in the last 3 days DD hasn't wanted the booby at all. So as of last night I didn't even bother pumping, I figure I might as well stop since I reached my goal of 9 months. Right now I am so engorged, especially my right boob. It has to be a cup size larger than the left. I guess because this was always my dominant side.

Re: Q for those who weaned from BF

  • Congratulations to you on BFing for 9 months!!!   I have posted on here a few times about what a hard time I had with it, and finally gave it up after 1 month (hangs head in shame)Embarrassed.  But it really was the right decision for me.

Anyhoo...I stopped cold turkey, which really is NOT the way to do it...but I had several friends tell me just to get it over with.  The first day (Friday) I was very engorged but not painfully so...Saturday was REALLY bad and very uncomfortable...my left side was also a lot bigger than my right and it hurt a lot more than the rt breast.  I was leaking like crazy, was horribly uncomfortable sleeping...but on Sunday I did notice some softening and less tenderness and today they are totally soft, no pain or tenderness....still some leaking/tingling. I did pump twice just to relieve some of the pressure...only about 1 oz each time.

So....its about 2-3 days of varying degrees of pain and uncomfortableness but now its over....and LO is fine.  I think weaning can take a couple weeks and you are still somewhat engorged...

With my 2nd I had a much easier transtion - weaning with my 1st was horrible.. but I did it cold turkey (I exclusively pumped, so really had no idea what I was in store for).  Plus emotionally I was a wreck, which I think added to my pain - which lasted about a week - with a couple of days of pure torture.

My 2nd nursed for almost 9 months & we were both ready to stop. I was still engorged at the end, when he was no longer nursing.. but would just hand express a little to help ease any pain/engorgement.  After about a week the "painful" part went away (for me it really did not hurt).. still leaked for a while though.

  • I haven't weaned yet, but the advice I have read and received is to gradually reduce your pumping, dropping one session every few days or so.

Since it's a bit late for that, I would pump just for a few minutes to relieve the engorgement and reduce the pumping time each day.

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • Thank you ladies. I had no idea what to expect. Jarbatz, there is nothing to be ashamed of. You have to do the right thing for YOU & you did. Things don;t always work out the way you expect.

  • I never had much milk so stopping was super easy. I just stopped pumping at work during the day and gradually the milk went away. I manually expressed a bit if my boobs hurt but they rarely did. It was easy for me but I think it would have been painful if I had more milk to begin with. Congrats on sticking with it for 9 months!!
