Angelcare monitor is it necessary?

A friend just bought it for us and dropped it off. It is an extremely nice gift and I had it on my registry. Just curious if you have one and if you think it is necessary? Does it also work as a regular monitor? Should I keep it, or return and get the video monitor on my registry?  TIA !

Re: Angelcare monitor is it necessary?

  • It's not necessary but I love it.  In fact, I am so obsessed with it that I bought a second one for DS #2 instead of taking the one out of DS #1's crib (and he's clearly old enough to not be at risk of SIDs).  I think the sound function is awesome and ours gives a temp reading which has been really useful (although I think there is a cheaper version out now that doesn't have that).

I also love the video monitor so it would be a tough call if I had to choose between the two.  If you can afford to buy the video monitor on your own, I say have them both!

  • It does work as a regular monitor.  I don't even use mine to tell you the truth.  It really depends on your house.  I don't even need a monitor in my house.  To me it the Angelcare made me worry more...I always worried if it was going to work.
  • I love it. I have 2 for the twins and I seriously do not think I could live without it. It gives me such a peace of mind when I know it's there and I am sure I will appreciate it more with Elena who has had breathing problems.

It does work as a regular monitor and we use it for now. We have a video monitor that we will be using once we are moved in to our new house.

I would definitely keep it if I were you!

  • Not necessary and I think too many people use it unsafely. I know several people who let their babies sleep on their tummies because they have this monitor. The monitor will go off AFTER baby has stopped breathing...when it could be too late.

A regular or video monitor are fine.  My regular monitor picks up on Jack's breathing so when it's quiet, I just run and peek in on him.

We did buy it originally because DS was a tummy sleeper.  Yes, it goes after it detects no movement for 20 seconds (essentially after they stopped breathing).  We discussed this with the pedi and she said after 20 seconds of no breathing whether SIDS is related to a baby getting into too deep of a sleep or carbon dioxide levels, you would be able to waken the baby back into breathing.

  • Honestly, I think it's a bit much, but that's just me.  Also, I don't care for the video monitors.  There was something on Dateline that said if a person happens to be driving by who has one of those "Back-Up" cameras in their car, they can tune in and get the video signal in your nursery.  Creepy.

I'm very happy with my audio-only monitor.

  • I love my Angelcare monitor!  I see it as doing everything I can to protect my son and give me peace of mind.  It does work as a regular monitor too...just with extra features.

  • We have 2 now.  For some reason I couldn't bring myself to take it out of DDs crib for LO.  So we went and bought a 2nd one.  We also have a video monitor that is especially great for the toddler.  Now I know exactly what she is doing in her room.

  • Yup I like mine. He sleeps in a co-sleeper right next to me. The other day my mom questioned why I needed the monitor when he is right next to me. That same night the alarm went off. I reached over and jostled him just a little and he took a big deep breath and the alarm stopped. It chills me to think what could have happened without the monitor. And he was RIGHT next to me. But who is going to "hear" their baby stop breathing if they are sleeping too?

So I like my Angelcare, a lot!

  • I have a different brand, but I love it.  Mine doesn't transmit sound, though, so I have another monitor, too.  We have a video one as our second.  Honestly, they both allow me to sleep soundly.  The nights DD has gone 7 hrs have not worried me because of the two monitors.   I never had to disturb her sleep to make sure she was breathing.
