reflux mommas...any tips for prevacid??

We started prevacid today for a 2 week trial to see if it helps Carson.  Tonight I broke the tab in half, mixed it with some BM and gave it to him in a syringe...any better ways?  How do you get it cut perfectly in half? TIA.

Re: reflux mommas...any tips for prevacid??

  • YES~! We have mastered this! I use the target pharmacy syringe (the tip is wider and works well) we mix with 4 cc of apple juice and just line up the balls in the tip of the syringe before we shoot it in the mouth.

The way we measure it is I seperate it out in 2 bottle caps from the Medela bottles and you can tip them on the side and really see if they are even before giving one bottle cap worth for one dose!

Call me if you have questions - Prevacid is my lifesaver.

P.S. If you have a compounding pharmacy near you they can compound it into liquid for you if it gets too tricky!

  • ours doesn't have little balls, hehe : )  We have a "solutab"...it dissolves in liquid, or it's supposed to.  There is still a little residual in the syringe.
  • OHHHHH :) Page MrsLauren she gives it that way!! I wanted the tabs but we got the gelcaps with the balls inside!

  • I'm here!

    Love the solutabs, so easy!

I break the pill in half with my fingers. Owen takes half in the morning and half at night.

I take a 10 cc syringe, and pull out the plunger. Place the solutab in the syringe, and replace the plunger all the way down. Draw up water (usually 3-4cc) and shake it up! Then make sure you angle the syringe to get all the pink medicine into the tip and I give it to him a few squirts at a time.

Let me know if you have specific questions :)

  • I do what MrsLauren does.  I also got a pill splitter from the drug store, makes it incredibly easy to split the tab and then it holds the other half until I need it next.

  • We just ran out and we're trying to go without it and she's doing well but we had a pretty good system (I think).  We also used the solutabs and dissolved them in water.  I always just put the tab on the counter and used a sharp knife.  I lined it up in the middle and applied pressure evenly on the knife and it usually split right in half.  Watch out...sometimes one half tends to get away from you so you have to keep an eye out.  We then put some water in a little cup.  We used a medicine dropper to measure out the amount of water and put it in a shot glass.  Then we dropped the tab into the shot glass and let it dissolve.  We gave her the meds using the dropper out of the shot glass.  Then we rinsed out the glass and filled the dropper up with water a few times and squeezed it out until the little specs were cleaned out.

Hey there - we started on the Zantac with DS for his reflux and after 5 days of no improvement our GI switched us to Prevacid.  With the Prevacid we had immediate results.  We have the liquid compound made at a speciality pharmacy - it is flavored with Cherry and DS loves it.  Our GI wants to switch him to the solutabs, but I think we are better off with the compound.  I am used to it now, as is DS and I don't see the need to fix something that isn't broken!
