Unless DH's job should change in the next few years (unlikely), we'll most likely move up north to be closer to his job. I love South Austin, but the drive is just ridiculous and I hate that it takes away from our family time. We won't do anything for at least another year since we want to be very sure he's not going to relocate again, but we were just talking today about how we should educate ourselves more on the north Austin/RR/CP areas so we can watch those markets a bit.
Neither of us are very familiar with north Austin, but I know lots of you are! What are some great neighborhoods up there? He works near 35 and 183, so we probably wouldn't go too far west. Our priorities are *great* schools, neighborhood with amenities (pool, park, etc.), and a little more established (big trees, not a ton of new construction, etc.) We'd love to be somewhere with places to walk to (grocery, restaurants, shops, etc.), but I'm not sure how common that is up there. To give you an idea - we LOVE Circle C and that would totally be our choice if we were to stay south ... what's comparable to that up north? No real price range at this point since we're just researching for now.
TIA, ladies!
ETA: if you don't want to share your neighborhood info here, feel free to PM me.
Re: northies, can you help?
RR and Leander/Cedar Park are both fantastic school districts. I'm not as crazy about AISD, but there are great schools in ASID. You'd just really have to do your homework and figure out which ones they were.
Avery Ranch is a great community. I don't think there's a grocery store in there, but there are restaurants at the front of it that you could walk to fairly easily. I also love the Forest Creek, Sonoma, Beherens Ranch, and Wood Glen neighborhoods. out of those neighborhoods listed, Wood Glen is the only one that does not have an elementary school in the neighborhood. Sonoma and Behrens Ranch both have middle schools as well. Our next move will hopefully put us in one of the above neighborhoods!
We really love living in Round Rock.
DISLIKE.
NOTHING is comparable. Just move over here and J can lifeguard at the pool.
OK, how much will you charge us to rent a shed in your backyard? Pretty sure that's all we'll get on a lifeguard salary. :::sob:::

no advice re: neighborhoods, but I wouldn't go much further north than the border of CP - it's a PITA just to get to 183 and traffic is basically bumper to bumper from lakeline to mopac.
JMO, of course!

This.
We live off of 183 between 620 and 1431 and traffic on 183 to 35 isn't the best, going or coming.
I like our neighborhood. Fave part is that we are steps (literally) away from Brushy Creek Trail. We can walk/ jog to the Y or to Brushy Creek Park. Yes, there are restaurants in the neighborhood, but not a comfortable walk from our house. Probably about 5 miles round trip and when I go to Z Tejas, I'm not going to want to walk home.
Umm...let's see. It's hit or miss as to whether or not you end up w/ cool neighbors. We have good ones on one side and on the other side, they completely stay to themselves.
The school on our side of the neighborhood is good, and there's a new school (opened last year, I believe) on the other side- oh, both elem.

I live in Steiner (moving in a few weeks more central) and I do not recommend it based on traffic issues if that's a concern for you. Beautiful neighborhood, great schools, but for my DH to get from our house to his office in East Austin takes an hour each way. Traffic on 2222 and 620 can be horrific during rush hour. I work south, so I go through Lakeway and avoid all of it.
