Austin Babies

Has anyone on here tried cabbage leaves for weaning?

Ouch. My b00bies hurt.

It's painful enough emotionally to be going through this (I am surprised at how sad I am to be weaning at 14 months) but I am also physically very uncomfortable.

Do cabbage leaves really work or is this an old wives' tale?

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

TIA!

  • I'm sorry, girl. I can't even imagine how hard that is. I've heard that wearing a really tight sports bra around the clock helps. (((hugs)))

  • no experience with weaning yet, but i used cabbage leaves when i was engorged right after rubes was born. they worked well. but be careful, you don't want to leave them on too long. i think i used the guidelines on kellymom.

  • I didn't bf and the postpartum nurse showed up for the first time with a head of cabbage. She covered my b00bs with cabbage leaves and bound them.

When I got home I wore two sports bras with cabbage leaves in them 24 hours a day (even in the shower). I changed the leaves out every few hours.
  • I didn't try cabbage leaves, but I did have to bind myself.  I wore the binding for a 2-3 days and then I wore my tightest sports bra around the clock until I was comfortable going back to a regular bra (about a week or so).  I did take off the binding/sports bra for showers, as I really needed to 1) relieve some pressure and 2)I needed a moment bra-free.

    (((hugs)))

  • I never breastfed but I used cabbage leaves when I was engorged two days after giving birth.

I kept the cabbage in the fridge so it would be nice and cold.  I covered by boobs in the cold leaves, then wrapped ACE bandages around as tight as I could.  I even had DH help with this because he could get it much more secure.  And it was easier for me to hold the leaves in place while he wrapped :)

I did that for an entire day and night, and the next day the pain was gone.  I was still a bit lumpy for a couple days, but not nearly as bad and it didn't hurt.

  • Thanks a bunch Ladies!

Bobcat - For how many days did you have to do this?

Boxer - I'll go check out Kellymom now. Thanks!

  • In addition to cabbage, I think my sister said something about taking antihistimines to help dry up? I could totally be making that up though.

Hope you feel better soon. I would say ((hugs)) but I don't want to hurt ya!

  • Take an antihistamine (like sudafed, benadryl at night)...it will help dry you up.

The cabbage did jack for me, other than make me stink.

From a few days before my milk came in to 3-4 days after.

I have heard of taking Sudafed to help dry it up.

The cabbage does get stinky so I would wash myself but not let the water shoot directly on them.
  • The cold cabbage leaves helped the girls feel better but didn't dry me up.  I know some people thought they were fantastic though. I second the antihistamine rec. That does dry you up.  I weaned DD at 13 months and man oh man did those suckers hurt.  I was shocked how painful and full I felt after weaning from one feeding a day.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Yes, exactly! We were only down to 1 nursing session a day and I don't get why it is soo soo painful!

And seriously, you'd think I had never done this before! I keep asking DH, did I complain about the excruciating pain the first time around?

Poor guy hugged me when he came home from work yesterday and I was in tears because it hurt so much!

  • I don't think they helped make the process go any faster.  I was still in engorged for days, still in pain and I still felt like an idiot with salad in her bra.
