When should I tell?

(This is my first time posting on this board.  My DH and I just found out that I'm pregnant last week.)

Here is the situation that I am in and would love and suggestions.

Next month, over memorial day weekend, my husband and I along with some cousins and friends have a horseback riding trip planned.  Obviously I won't be able/want to go riding (they go for very long rides) so I'm sort of unsure when to tell that we are expecting.

My husband and I talked about making our announcement at 8 weeks, which would be before our trip, but a part of me would really like to try to hold out a little longer.

So do I just tell the guys we are riding with the reason I'm not riding and tell everyone else once we get home (which would mean that other family would know before our own parents and siblings) or do we just tell everyone ahead of the trip?

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: When should I tell?

  • What's great about having a baby is that there are no rules as to how you approach different things. You can tell who ever you want, whenever you want. It doesn't matter how anyone else does it. Completely up to you. I like your idea of telling those you'll be on the trip with, but again, it's all what makes you and your husband most comfortable.

Thank you for this.  You're right, I just have to remember that this is our choice that we can do things how we want to do them, there is no right or wrong way.  I guess I just talk myself out of telling people too early b/c I would hate for something to happen.  I guess that is something I can't think about.  But after dealing with PCOS and meeting with fertility doctors, it just makes you a little more cautious.

    Thank you again!

  • I'm in a similar situation, there is a girl's weekend the first of June. It's my mom's family, cousins, aunts, etc. and they're going to wonder why I'm not drinking.

I was thinking of waiting until then to out myself, but decided that my mom and sisters should know before everyone else.  I've decided to announce at Mother's Day to my mom and sisters and ask them not to say anything until June when I tell the rest of the females in the family.  I plan to send an email to my dad's side of the family before I leave on the trip.  I don't see them in person very often since my dad and grandmother passed away, but at least this way, they find out at about the same time as the rest of my family.

  • of course it's totally up to you - I know how you feel.  I have PCOS and have been under treatment to finally get pregnant.  I wish I could be more carefree about it like my other friends, but I worry so much.  However, we did tell our parents pretty much right away.  Ultimately I decided that I wanted their thoughts and prayers and if something did go wrong we'd have their support to lean on.  Just a thought!

  • I understand (especially given your TTC journey) the desire to be cautious.

If you're comfortable lying - develop a lower back injury... nothing serious, but something that obviously means you're NOT riding based on purely a comfort issue.

Is it important to YOU to tell your parents first? If you don't care and feel ready to tell friends, go ahead. But like others have said, do what's right for you.

I love this. :)  I actually thought about saying I had a really bad headache or something but knew that would be hard to pull off for 4 days or whatever.  I'll have to talk with my husband and see what he thinks.  I'm also not a very good liar, so that could be hard for me to do too.

Maybe we'll see how things go at our ultrasound appointment and then make the call if we should tell or not.

    Thanks again!
