Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is this what all home daycares are like?

So we have been looking for DCP's for ds and found a licensed-home care 3min away, right across the street from a bus stop. Were a one car family so it would have been amazing. I would walk ds to DC in the stroller, leave it there and my SO would pick ds and the stroller up everyday at 4pm.

WEEELLL ...went to visit the dcp to check it out. She has 7 kids, all ages 2.5 - 5yrs, ds would be the only infant coming in at 11mos. It kind of goes in a circle so when she is in the kitchen or change station or bathroom or nursery she cant see any of the kids. Big kids sleep on the floor and babies sleep in PNP's in the same room- thats fine. Whats not fine is that she doesnt use a baby monitor and closes the door. I asked if she would use one and she went on about how its not needed and closing the door is fine. So many situations run through my head -- toddlers are quiet when they get into trouble HELLO?? She also didnt have a gate at the top of the outdoor stairs going down into the DC (her basement). They whole place looks like a huge playroom with an insane amount of toys everywhere, almost messy because there are too many.

OH and she couldnt give me a schedule of what they do but she went over it with me verbally and it includes TV for 30min twice a day.....Um Im not paying you $800 a mo to sit him in front of a tv.

OH OH - and she asked me to please wean him so he can take bottles easier by the time he comes...........

Soooooo thats a no go on the super close, cheap daycare :(

  • No, not all home daycares are like this.  She sounds very unreasonable and is doing what is best for her.  There are 4 babies at our daycare.  It is in the basement of a house and that is where they all are.  I get a report everyday of what they ate and what time.  And also their diaper changes.  There are 2 women there at a time and they are wonderful to the girls.

I hope you find something else reasonable for you.

  • no .. they most certainly are NOT !

dd is at an in-home center w/ 3 other lil girls ages 11 months to 4 years. tv is not on and the kids aren't allowed past the living/dining/kitchen areas inside the house. the 2 infants (dd and her buddy) sleep in pnp's in the expanded living room area. the play area can get messy but my dcp also puts an emphasis on cleaning up as you go along Big Smile so the mess is contained.

there is no tv time in the daily schedule ... handwashing, yoga, dance, storytime, art projects, freeplay ... yes but NO scheduled tv time.

  • Whoa! That would definitely be a no. So many red flags! I'm sorry that one didn't work out, but I am glad that you discovered these things before enrolling your LO. GL with your hunt. There are great providers out there.

  • The ladies who posted above summed up my daycare too.  Hannah doesn't usually sleep downstairs with the older kids (2-4 on any given day, 2-5 years old).  i think she only slept downstairs in the pack-n-play 2 times, all the other times she sleeps upstairs in the crib.  Hannah does have a monitor, but she's a pretty easy going baby.  She'll lay there and talk/play herself to sleep.  She not the type to cry.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are times where she has had to cry it out, but to be honest, she's old enough to put herself to sleep and I know Hannah's not her only child there she needs to take care of.  Hannah is well taken care of, I have no worries.

  • In addition to all of that (which is a big Hell to the No for me!), sounds like too many kids for one person to handle.

    Hope you find something else!!

  • Absolutely not! Our in home daycare is awesome! She has a schedule that the kids adjust to and she lets you know when the kids are ready to go to "school", pretty much by 3, if not earlier. I don't think I would do very well knowing there were 5 year olds around partially unsupervised.
